Anybody out there know a good chapter or review article discusssing neuropsychological assessment/tests? Was just reading the Carlat interview book and realized a) a number of the tests we use all the time (ie serial 7s) may not be particularly useful and/or do not test what we think they do b) neuropsychological assessment in general is a large gaping hole in my training thus far. Not looking for a giant textbook, but rather a quick read on the standard neuropsych tests we use and what brain areas they test. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Essentials of Neuropsychological Assessment (2nd edition, just published) by Hebben and Milberg will give you a basic overview of things. It is a good text for someone without much background in neuropsychology. It has descriptions of common neuropsychological assessments, talks about some of the things that would be helpful to include in your H&P, and provides some basic interpretations for common assessments. I would not recommend attempting to interpret any assessments using it, but it provides a snapshot of what some of the assessments are examining.

If you read that and want more detailed information, then I'd recommend Lezak's "Neuropsychological Assessment" and Strauss' "A Compendium of Neuropsychological Tests". I use both daily, and I find them invaluable, though they are overkill if you what a Reader's Digest explanation of things.

ps. SDN has a nifty Amazon search at the bottom of the forum if you are looking to buy the book (and help SDN out). It should be around $30.
