So I'm currently studying anatomy (yes, go ahead and make a joke) and wondering how difficult it was for those of you who also took it. I'm having a hard time memorizing everything, and I wanted to know if I'm not alone in this...any advice/tips? A pep talk would be nice at this point, if you're so inclined. 🙂 Thanks!

Find mnemonic devices where you can, use flash cards, and draw things out where it'll help. Origin, insertion, innervation, blood supply. Don't just know names; know relationships, actions, clinical gems. It gets worse in medical school, so it'll help you to find a study strategy for this type of material now. Good luck!

I'm currently registered for anatomy next quarter. Not too excited about it, I hear it's fairly difficult.

Why do people take anatomy in undergrad?

The course I'm taking is comparative vertebrate anatomy. It focuses on human anatomy but shows the embryological and evolutionary relationships with other vertebrates too.

Why do people take anatomy in undergrad?

A) It was reqiured for my major
B) It was the most interesting course I took in undergrad (and probably my favorite)
C) It helped me honor anatomy in medical school

To be fair, I didn't know (C) was going to happen when I signed up for undergrad anatomy. That was just a bonus.

Seriously though, while undergrad anatomy is nothing like medical school anatomy as far as volume, it helps to know the lay of the land and have a little bit of the jargon already under your belt.

Then again, I did just as well in biochem in med school and never had a day of biochem in my undergrad career. So take that for what it's worth.

Why do people take anatomy in undergrad?

Because i loved the subject and enjoyed taking the courses. I took two semesters and am a kines major and i now am a tutor and TA. Ive also taken physiology courses. Im not taking it for some added benefit for med school, altho i'm sure at the least it will be nice to be familiar with the body, and i do know quite a bit more information than someone who has never taken any course like that.

Adding onto my original post, do you guys think I should drop the course? I enjoy it, but I also have multiple reasons as to why I would drop it...one of them being it's not a pre-requisite for med school. That being said, how beneficial is it to take anatomy during undergrad?

You know, most medical students haven't had anatomy before medical school. Most medical students graduate medical school. Most medical students match into their desired specialty.

I didn't have anatomy before medical school. I did fine. I didn't honor it, but we don't have honors first year so who knows. But it is one of those courses that is straight up memorization and there are a lot of parts to the ol' body. No doubt if you already knew it you'd have a little less pressure.

So how beneficial is it? +/-

I think it's smarter to take classes you want to take in undergrad, because medical school doesn't have a lot of "elective" time to pursue other interests. If you've always though Greek Mythology would be cool, now's the time. You'll get anatomy during medical school either way.

OP, if you get any embryology, pay attention. That'll be nice knowledge to have.

I took Zoology and Anatomy in undergrad and loved both. The thing that helped me most was to draw a picture on a flashcard and number everything I need to know in the picture. I remember drawing most of those flashcards to this day. Try it!
