Hey all,

Just trying to gather some opinions on where I can get a good GU elective. We do very little of it since our Uro service is next to non-existent these days. It's rare that we even get a prostate.

That being said, where is a good place I can go to get this stuff under my belt and not look like too much of a fool in practice?

Sorry to hear that you are not seeing GU cases. OUR lab and other reference labs are hitting even academic centers now apparently. Sad state of affairs.

I would recommend looking at Indiana actually. Really strong and well respected GU path there. Also look at Michigan and Stanford for some strong GU programs. These are not the only good ones, but it is a place to start and I know they accept outside-rotating residents.

If you're looking on the east coast, JHU has a busy GU consult sign out which is predominantly prostate. Dr. Epstein also does teaching sessions from a box set periodically. I hear that MSK has an active GU consult service as well, which has more bladder biopsies (so I hear).

The AFIP is dead. Long live the AFIP.

My understanding is that as such, there is no more AFIP at all as of Sept 15, 2011. As they move closer to that date, AFIP functions are being terminated or transferred. Exactly what is happening when, and how that will affect their educational functions such as path resident rotations, I don't know. The website (www.afip.org) has some information, including on the summer 2010 newsletter -- draw your own conclusions. (Considering their medical education department is closing, I wouldn't hold my breath or otherwise count on an opportunity being available in the next year or two.)

The Methodist Hospital in Houston has some good GU. More bladder and kidney and less prostate biopsy, although plenty of prostatectomies. No GU fellowship there, though, so might not be the best choice if you are trying to get to know fellowship directors. But if you want a fun month learning GU from the guys who trained Mahul Amin and David Grignon, then Methodist would be a good choice (Dr. Alberto Ayala and Dr. Jae Ro, who work at Methodist, both worked at MD Anderson for many years and trained those previously mentioned GU greats).
