I'm a 3rd year MS trying to plan fourth year electives at other schools. Do you know schools that are good for away electives? Also what schools have well know faculty that would be good to get letters of rec from. Any schools that have nice faculty that are willing to write good letters? Mahalo!

Do an away rotation at a place you think you may want to train. Get a letter from any faculty member you worked closely with, it does not have to be a well known person. A thoughtful letter from an unknown is often better than a vague letter from a "big shot." Of course, a thoughtful letter from a bigshot is the best of both worlds! Good luck.

PS -- When you are on your away rotations make it a point to set up meetings with both the program director and the chairman early in the rotation (1st week) and also late in the rotation (4th week). It would be ashame to spend an entire month there and not have anyone know you are there, or introduce yourself to the PD / Chair in the last week when it's too late for them to get to know you at all. Be assertive about this, because it conveys interest and shows a program that you are serious about training there.
