I saw a different thread where people were discussing some interesting med-related books they have come across lately. I consider myself not very well read by any stretch of the imagination, so I thought maybe I'd ask some of you for your personal favorites!

Few books I've enjoyed:
  • Better - Atul Gawande
  • Complications - Atul Gawande
  • Emperor of all maladies - Siddhartha Mukherjee
  • The DOs - Norman Gevitz

What are some other interesting books that you would recommend? Many thanks!

Also, pm me if you like lovecraft, andy weir, phil k dick, asimov, orwell so we can be friends!

Gawande's Being Mortal is excellent, absolute must-read in my opinion. I also recommend When The Air Hits Your Brain (Verostick), basically anything by Paul Farmer, and The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down (Fadiman). I also really want to read that book that came out recently by James O'Connell, Stories from the Shadows, about his work with homeless folks in Boston.

The Soul of The Doctor was a great book written by 3rd year med students during their first patient interactions during rotations.

Anything by Bernard Cornwell, Joseph Wambaugh, Laura Joh Rohland and Walter Moseley.

No.

Why not?
it totally opened my eyes to a lot of issues with elder care and aging in general and reinforced for me the need for creativity in medicine. Loved it, and also feel that it is a must read for anyone going into medicine.

anyway, my contribution, medical fiction, short stories: A History of the Present Illness - Louise Aronson

I liked Hot Lights, Cold Steel: Life, Death & sleepless nights in a surgeon's first year by Michael Collins

I have also heard The House of God is good

I've been reading a lot of neurology and sleep medicine related books lately. "Awake at 3:00 AM" was written sometime in the 80s but it was a pretty good read. A lot has probably changed in sleep medicine but I learned a lot from it.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned what I consider the best of them all: The Emperor of All Maladies. Read it.

Mortal Lessons: Notes on the Art of Surgery by Richard Selzer. This guy has a unique style. He basically says, "Why can't doctors be poets, too?" and he describes his various surgical experiences organ by organ as he relates each organ poetically to something else. He has written many other med-related books, as well.
