Howdy,
long time lurker, first time poster.
I am a Med-3 interested in an academic career in anesthesia. I like anesthesia because procedures+++, instant gratification, the possibility of integrating critical care into my practice, less rounding/clinic, and the people I have met in the field so far are awesome; also, I like the science behind it.
Anyhow, I'd like to have an academic career, ideally doing outcomes research, and doing some teaching. I'm ok with the hit my salary will have to take for that (I was raised in more humble conditions than most of my classmates to begin with, as long as I can pay off my student loans and have shelter and sufficient food on the table I'm fine)
I understand that in order to maximize my chances for an academic career I should do residency at one of those academic powerhouse type programs. The only problem is that my USMLE Step 1 is not that stellar (228). I'm taking step 2 before the match, but who knows what the result's gonna be for that one. Other than that I think my application is going to be relatively solid (4 published papers (1 first author), 5 currently under review (3 first author), 7 published abstracts, >20 conference presentation co-authored) , good clinical grades so far) but I worry that my USMLE will get me filtered out relatively quickly...
Long story short, what do y'all think my chances are / what can I do to improve my application do try and make up for the low-ish Step 1?
Thanks so much,
Cheers,
SM
