I am an MS4 going into anesthesiology and just finished up a SICU rotation that I absolutely LOVED. I'm still working on the list of residency programs to apply to and wondered if anyone had advice on programs that would offer good CC experience to residents? I know everyone will rotate through various ICU's but I figure some places may offer more than others. Any advice is appreciated!

Univ. of Chicago has a good ICU experience/focus.

Lots of resident autonomy, SICU, Burn ICU, Cardiothoracic ICU and a separate neuroICU that anesthesia doesn't run, but has great attendings that staff neuroICU consults in the units anesthesia runs.

MICU is run by the pulm/CC team, but the anesthesia intensivist attendings attend there as well. You can spend a couple categorical internship months in that unit as well.

You can do >6 months of ICU in residency if you want in very different units.

Lots of bedside anesthetics for trachs, scopes, etc.

Can even work with the ENT's on their bedside trachs.

ICU faculty there are superstars (current SCCA president, strong researchers) and great people to work with.

If you want an amazing hands on experience I highly recommend looking into this program. All the big hitters in this program, including the chairman, are intensivists. You manage transplants, VADS, ECMO, and post-op heart cases by yourself on call. As a resident i often did bedside TEE and TTE on call while i spoke with surgeons driving in from home. If you want a little bit of everything this place has it. you do 6 months total during residency and have the option to moonlight for $75/hr in the ICU once you are a senior resident. I can't tell you how excellent the experience is and I can assure you that no residents at the CCF are as comfortable as me trouble shooting a Heart Mate II or ABiomed VAD.

I think the University of Washington's curriculum now includes a total of 6 months ICU if you do their categorial (4 year) residency. They also have a combined anesthesiology-critical care tract residency. Harborview is the only level one trauma center covering 4 states, so you would definitely get loads of experience caring for trauma patients.

I agree completely with my former co-chief resident and good friend.
