Good Safety Schools

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
With your GPA and your sGPA I think you should be considering DO schools rather than MD schools. Even a 2.89 GPA is way too low for most DO schools. Also without an MCAT it is hard to adequately chance you. At most schools your BCPM GPA will get you screened out.

I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything just being realistic. EVERYONE has good ECs. There are very few purely unique candidates so don't think that you are outdoing anyone. Everything you have done, someone has already done it, with better grades and better MCAT. with this economy there are no "safe schools". As a former U of Colorado grad it is not a safe school at all. There average MCAT is around a 34 with a really high MCAT. apply to schools like Creighton, SLU, NY medical college. You won't get very many looks from state schools with those stats, but at this point it obviously comes down to your MCAT. Good luck and study hard for it.

I think you are in for a major surprise and really have no clue. No offense, just being realistic.

I read your stats from your other post. Med school application just gets more competitive every year. There really isn't any such thing as a safety school. You're not in state for Colorado, which makes it a tough school to get in to. There are a lot of people on these threads that know what they are talking about and plenty of pre-meds who think they do. I'm a pre-med that thinks he does. Look at MSAR, compare your stats to those listed. If your lizzy m score is 5 points higher than theirs, than its a 'safety' school. With your stats, (as well as mine, so don't take it personally) there is almost no such thing.
I asked the non-trad question and got http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=810608 See Catlystik's post with the list. Get your BCPM up and we should be in the same boat.

Are you a TX resident? My reply is going to go ahead and assume that you are; based on your posts, I think that you are. Actually, even if you're not a TX resident the advice will be similar.

My background: paramedic for ~12 years; EMT-B for 1 year, first year medical student at Baylor in Houston.

Here's the deal...at most MD schools, your app is going to be screened out because of your GPA. If you don't get your BCPM above 3.0, you'll probably get screened out by DO schools too.

I know you're "aiming for at 35" on the MCAT. Actually getting at 35 is exceptionally difficult. In fact, a 35 is basically knowing the science material at a freakish level+excellent reasoning skills+luck. That's something around the 93-94th percentile or so. Even with say a 32, you'll still probably not fare too well with MD schools. As an example, I applied with 3.75/3.71/34P and had the ECs mentioned above. I didn't even get interviews at San Antonio or Galveston as a TX resident. So even with the numbers, you can see that it's still a bit of a crapshoot. Without the GPA, you add even more crap to the shoot.

Your options as I see them: 1) apply to every DO school in the country+some TX MD schools like A&M and Tech. 2) get straight As on the rest of your BCPM+master's degree with straight As in upper division science courses. 3) consider alternatives to med school.

Good luck.
