Hey, i've been checking out the boards for a while, and i've never heard anyone talk about UMKC. I'm from Kansas City (and its the only school in the state) and all the students here say its great. Is it a good school from what you've heard? I'm planning on applying to UPenn, Michigan, UOP, Harvard, Maryland, UMKC, Temple, and Baylor. Are the rest of these schools better that UMKC (and would you pick them instead, even if out of state)? Thanks in advance.

Being a "good school" is all relative. What are you looking for in your dental education? If UMKC has it, then it is a great school! Do your homework and research the schools you are considering. I guarantee you that it will pay off in more ways than one. Best of luck!

Welcome to SDN!!

agutier is right. The best school is in the eye of the beholder. A school that I love might be the one that is ranked the lowest by you. So when the time comes around go to the schools (interviews) and see for yourself what school "fits" you the best.

Like Johnny Cockran might say:

"If the School FITS, It must be LEGIT!!"

If you want to stay in the Kansas City area, UMKC is probably a great choice for you. Often, the local people are only familiar with UMKC so to them it is a great school. And it probably is. Don't go by what the opinion of these boards are. Where you went to school means very little for 99% of the patients that come to you. So pick a school based on why it appeals to you (location, cost, facility, opportunity, etc), and then do your best to get a good education from that school.

I applied to UMKC's direct program when I was a senior in high school, luckily I got waitlisted. The other schools are definitely better schools in reputation, and therefore I would assume clinical and academic skills. I have two friends that are in the direct medical program there and absolutely hate it. They say the social life sucks, and the school isnt rated that good, and so they will have a harder time specializing compared to if they had gone to Penn, Harvard, etc. Although if you did get top 90's on the boards and have a good gpa you can always specialize, but its a little harder. Another reason no one talks about UMKC is that they are like Georgia and really only accept in-state students, and students form states that dont have dental schools, such as arizona (well not any more), hawaii, and alaska. If money is an issue, like a lot of the other guys said, it is an accreditted dental school, and if y ou want to be a dentist it doesnt really matter where you go that much.
