I haven't heard IU's school of optometry mentioned much on here and I was wondering if there was a reason for that? IU is kind of a default school for me to apply to because I live about half an hour away. This is nice because tuition would be a lot cheaper there than anywhere else I might go. However, I don't know if I really want to be in Bloomington and IU doesn't do vision therapy, so I am starting to look other places. So to the IU students out there: am I wrong? Should I reconsider IU and if so, why?

IU doesn't do VT? They did when I was there as of three years ago.

Also, if you are capable of getting into a school and paying in-state tuition - YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST DO IT. That is a TON of money you're talking about. If I were you, I wouldn't even think about going anywhere else, whether they have VT or not.

2 GIANT reasons to be going to IU.

Attending any of the established schools will prepare you well to practice all types of optometry.

Well, the cheaper aspect is a giant reason, I would actually prefer to be a little further from home than that. However, I already know price and location so what, from a student perspective, should make me want to go to IU for optometry school? What is special about IU that would make me want to pick it over other schools? Somebody sell this to me please.

Not to say you shouldn't consider tuition when making your decision, especially if that is important to you, but I chose NOT to take the in-state tuition when I picked a school. And I am happy I did it. I have had a great experience so far and I am glad I didn't let money be the deciding factor for me.

If IU is the right school for you then by all means go there and enjoy the cheaper tuition. But if you really want to go somewhere else because you like their program better and it is more geared toward what you want, you should do it. 4 years is a long time and school can be stressful at times. It is nice to be happy and enjoy where you are going to school and not always worrying about "what if".

I would really take the time to research the programs and figure out which one is the best fit for you. You might be surprised where it takes you 🙂

I don't mean to hammer this point too much, but if you can get in-state tuition, you would be a fool to pass it up. People can talk all they want about ignoring the cost and focusing on going somewhere you really like, but the fact of the matter is, you'll be paying these loans back for 30 years. You're talking about saving yourself hundreds and hundreds of dollars every month in a student loan payment. Take it from someone who got stuck with out-of-state tuition for four years. It didn't seem like a big deal at the time, until those first payments came due.

And you'll probably like anywhere you go anyway. IU is great. You're on a big university campus. There's all kinds of stuff to do all the time. Oh, and it would be WAY CHEAPER FOR YOU TO GO THERE.
