Hi All,
I am currently doing nothing but DAT 😱 ....and was wondering for those of you who got a 20 or above on the DAT:

1) how long did you study for it ???

2) Do you think there is a strong correlation between the GPA and how well you do on the DAT? I am asking this one because lately I met a couple of pple w/2.9 but a 20 or 21 on DAT and I was thinking 😕 😕

thanks alot for your input

I put in about six solid weeks of studying. Traditionally I have been a poor standardized test taker and I was determined to only take the DAT once and hence I really hit the books. On the other hand I have known people that only put in a week of cursory study time and aced the thing. The DAT is not designed to trick you nor do you need to possess a wild understanding of the subject material. In fact the test is rather straight forward in its wording and if you are comfortable with the material and have a solid foundation in many of the areas it covers, for example simple nomenclature for organic chemistry, then many of the answers will be obvious. With that said, no, I don't believe there is a strong correlation between one's gpa and DAT success. Why? Grading is very subjective and the politics that factor into one's gpa (how 'hard' a professor is/was, etc.) vary from year to year and school to school. One should not assume that because his/her gpa is 3.8 that he/she is virtually guaranteed a stellar score on the DAT. Likewise a person with a low gpa should not believe that they are pigeonholed into a low score.

Absolutely not. I have a 3.0 and got a 24 AA. It can be done! So good luck :luck:

I had a 3.1 and got a 24AA. I haven't even taken any classes for about 6 1/2 years now. Then again I study pretty consistantly for about 4 months and took the Kaplan course.

The test is an absolute joke. I studied for 2-3 weeks and hit a 23. Just read through some review books and youll be fine

Yeah, but you are probably smarter than the rest of us.

worked hard 5-6 days a week for a mininum of 4hours a day for 1.5 months and got a 21.

I studied 3 seriously for three weeks for about 5 hrs a day not including the tests I took almost every other day. No matter what your GPA is if you work hard you will do well on the DAT.

I studied a couple hours a day for 2 weeks and did pretty well. For me, it had been awhile since I had looked over gen chem, so i spent most of my time on that and PAT practice. If you've done well in your science classes, then chances are you will be fine. Good luck.

I really don't think that this is the case. Most people who are studying for this exam have already taken the pre-reqs needed for it. The only thing that is difficult is finding your niche on the pat.

Again, I really think that you yourself summed it up best when you noted that you hadn't taken a class for 6.5 years. For many traditional students, they have just recently taken these courses and the basics should be still planted in their heads.

thanks alot for your reply....now I have more faith that I can actually get a decent score...thanks again

you said the RC must come naturally, therin lies the problem for me :scared: . Any tips?

5-6 hrs a day for 2 months + the kaplan course. Good enough for a 23. My gpa's around a 3.0

After spending time here, on SDN, I've noticed some things:

The fact that the DAT is much easier than any of the practice exams.

In reality, the actual DAT is not that bad at all (except PAT).

The fact that getting a 20 is not that hard.

Considering you can only miss about 4-5 questions in each of the sciences to get into the 20's (btw, is that true?), is it that hard, really?

Comments/Inputs are welcome!

The more I read your posts, Dick, the more I think you're Ian Wright.

You're not the only person that thinks this.

Since u have such an awesome GPA and DAT scores. I believe applying to so many different school is merely a waste of money and problem for others who want to become dentist and donot have such high scores as yours. Why don't u decide to apply to school like Harward and leave rest of the school for others.

just a thought and advice. 🙂

8 hours a day for a month and got 22 AA 22 TS and 20 PAT.
My only advice is to buy TopScore.

It’s a little too late to cut some school because I took the DAT after I sent in my AADSAS application. Don’t worry about me taking spots at some school because if I get into MCG I am going there. Any way I hear Harvard is only good for research and I have no interest in that.

I got 21s across the board. I have a 3.0 GPA. I didn't study at all for the DAT. There's your correlation 🙂
