so heres my situation...

i applied to an M.A. in psychology program back in april. it was gonna be a hit or miss situation because at the time i didnt have my GRE scores, had a B.A. in an unrelated field and was barely half ways through taking the pre-req classes just to qualify as an applicant for the M.A. Basically i took this opportunity as a "test-run." if i didnt get in, oh well, at least i know how the process is like and ill really go for it next year. Around the same time i registered for the GRE exam scheduled in july 20th, i figured i'll need it for next year's application if i didnt get in, i'll also need it for applying to Ph.D programs.

so a few weeks back i got my acceptance letter into the M.A. program! So now my dilemma is, should i still take the GRE for the hell of it? I figured since i already got in, what's the point in taking it now? Or should i just wait until im about to apply for the Ph.D to take it? I know that if i cancel i'll lose out on half of the test fee, but hey its better than losing all of it.

what are your 2 cents?

tl;dr - Registered for July GRE exam at the same time I applied to M.A. Got accepted but don't know if I should still take the GRE.😕

It would depend if you feel that you will eventually move into a doctorate program once you get your MA. GRE scores last for a maximum for 5 years, so if you're MA program is 2-3 years and you immediately start applying to doctorate programs, your scores would count. However, you might obtain additional knowledge of the logistics/strategies of the GRE during your MA program, which could help you boost your score.

yeah i definiately plan on moving onto a Ph.D program afterwards. might as well just take the GRE now, and if I am unhappy with my score i'll retake it before applying to Ph.D programs.

Probably a good idea. If you are not strapped for cash it wouldn't hurt. Besides, you could consider it a test run if you are not happy with your scores and work on boosting them up after you're done with your MA program. I took the GRE twice since my first score was over 5 years old and I definitely needed to boost up my score. Sadly, it didn't go up hardly at all but was able to get into a PsyD program.

kudos on the PsyD! I'm not really strapped for cash, but the extra $80 refund does sound enticing. A test run is also a good way to look at it. That was my attitude towards applying to the MA:laugh:

Thats also true, if i decide to take it later, i can wait til after i am done w/ my MA.
