I have been admitted to SUNY Buffalo Dental school but I am an international student and none of my relatives will cosign my private loan. I have no other place to vent, so SDNers, here I am.
I have tried every alternative but to no avail. I had taken a year off to work towards getting into dental school. Seems like a total waste. If only I had a cosigner, if only my parents were rich...

hmmm..
But hang on!I thought to get into SUNY Buffalo you have to be a permanent resident or a citizen right? In that case you will qualify for federal loans and private banks will lend without a cosigner...

i completely agree with d(m)ental...try getting some loans preapproved without a co-signer...!u have to pass a credit-check!itz worth a try..
why dont u try the federal PLUS loan for grad students?it does'nt need a co-signer ,but it requires one to be a US citizen/gc holder...which i presume ...u r ...so go ahead...!
citibank and salli/nellie-mae will give u a loan...but might be at a higher interest rate..
all the best!

Hi catchmehere44,

Could you please tell us that how did you get an offer as an international student? Are you in adjustment of status as regard GC processing? U Buffalo has accepted application from candidates on adjustment of status in the past, BUT last year they refused admission to someone as this person could not show GC after admission offer.

Is there a possibility of defering the admission? Try it? No harm either way.

Your advice is for US citizen or GC holder, but not worth anything for an international student.

Well, If you find a way to pay for your education, just keep it posted here, I would be very very very intersted in knowing how you can finance your eduction without 1) Your parents(or somebody else) paying for it
2) Not having a cosigner for a private loan
You see I was an international student my self, and had to postpone my dream for 5 years!! I graduated in 2002(BS in Molecular Bio), but no money was available for dent school. So for 2 years I remained illegally in US, till getting my Green Card; then 2 more years to have conditional status removed, and finally getting the permanent resident status.
If there is a way, then I might be the biggest jackass that has ever visited this site!
P.S. : I forgot to mention that in between I had a deportation satus, thanks to Sept 11, and had to spend a few nights in a federal jail; this time thanks to my middle eastern passport...
So No matter what your sexes is: there is only one way, get married. Otherwise get ready for a very tough reality. Oh I forgot to mention, my former girlfriend( I dated her form 2000 till the end of 2001) decided to end up the relationship after the sept 11. It was to much for her to put up with everything that was going on.
In anycase, looking forward in hearing from u. If somebody can understand what a "poor" international student can go through, it is me. 🙂

I am an international student. I suppose SUNY Buffalo does accept internationals. Why else would they accept me?
Yes I am in a very sorry situation. One of my relatives had said that he would cosign my loan before i was accepted but later backed out. I am so dejected that I don't even want to type this response. I kind of feel really stupid to not have got the money before I even started the tedious process of applying.

yes i'm quite aware of that fact...,but how come an international student got accepted into a program which accepts only US citizens and gc holders? 😕 i was under the impression that the original poster IS a gc holder /US citizen...

Yeah, your completely right.
Program is only for US/GC holders...unless you are one, something doesnt seem quite right. 😕

I agree.Even called SUNY buffalo and they confirmed accepting only citizens or permanent residents.
Whats going on? 😕 😕

yes..this is absolutely true.I had called the school in dec. before I got my GC if they accepted students with GC in process and they refused.then how come u got an acceptance.STRANGE...

Could it be that the OP has got acceptance into the regular 4-year DDS or DMD program and not the Advanced Standing Program?

To the OP, sorry to hear about your situation. Hope everything works out for you in the end. Good luck. I feel for ya. It's bad enough trying to get into a school. It's even worse after getting in, but you can't afford to go. That really sucks.

yeah...maybe ..who knows....??? 😕

There is no room for confusion as in the very first sentence OP mentioned he/she is international student.......believe me international students in desparate need to find a co-signer clearly know his/her immigration status. I am one of them and sailing in the same boat. So I fully empathies with OP.

The moot question is what's going on in SUNY Buffalo? Why they accepted an international student instead and not an US citizen/GC holder as advertised on their website?

Well fido! looks like you may be next in the line. So be prepared to shovel your way to school next 3 winters!!

To catchmehere44,

I am terribly sorry to hear about your plight and dreading to face the same myself very soon. Did you try defering the admission?

Where does it say on their website that international students will not be considere? Can anyone send me the link?

After reseraching previous posts by catchmehere44 I came across the fact that he/she had an interview at U Buffalo on Dec 1, 2005. That makes him a Predent who was accepted in regular 4 years program and NOT a foreign-trained dentist. Hence I think the admission requirements differ for 4 year program.

I think controversies and confusions are laid to rest now.

rahmed

P.S. Of course it still doesn't settle the issue of co-signer and loan for OP.

😉 confusion...confusion...!thanks for the clarification!

What's all the confusion? I am not a foreign dentist. I am talkingabout the 4-year DDS program. And even in the paste by Starbucks, it does not say that one should be US citizen or GC holder. What use would such a requirement be to a foreign-trained dentist?
Anyways thanks for all the input.
Raminjun, can you check you private messages?

oops...i see that they do require documentation of citizenship or PR for foreign-trained dentists...i just added to the confusion!

Dear Starbucksfan,
This is only for foreign-trained dentists. I am not one. I have applied to the 4-year dental program.

Relax Mr. International I still don't have any co-signer. So I am equally tensed. Hopefully we all will get there.

😕 😕
Very confused.
Nile, Fido, Rhamed: :luck:
Can anyone please tellme what I am then??

I have graduated and worked as a dentist on a foreign country.
got married to an american in my country, my husband had to goo back to the U.S , we all moved here. But, I have now the american citizenship.

I am pretty sure I am an international trainned dentist, since I love our carreer and I miss working,I know I have to get graduated here from an acreddited dental school, so I am planning to follow all the steps as a regular international trainned dentist. Is there any difference if you are an american citizen? internationnally trainned?? 🙁

Please,can you answer that?
and another one.
since my GPa is not what I expected (very different grading sistem, etc) I was considering improving it by doing the POST BACCAULAREATE programs, does any one anything about those programs and International Trainned Dentists?

Thank-you, thank-you very much, for any information. 😉

You are an internationally trained dentist.By virtue of your marriage to an american citizen you may be a citizen or a permanent resident depending on your visa/green card status.[as you know the laws are comlpicated and this would be my best understanding of the situation and my cousin had to go through a similar situarion]
The advantage is you can apply to state schools that offer an advanced training program(eg-SUNY buffalo) and of course you can get loans easily.

What kind of Post Baccaulareate programs are you looking at?
Is it like Master of Public health/public administartion/oral biology/MS programs? If you could clarify I may have some info 🙂

Hello there Paz.

Just like D(M)ental said, you're recently accuired citizenship will allow you to apply to public/state schools which accept only permenant residents or citizens, and you may be eligible for financial aid/federal loans. Other than that, it is pretty much the same. Same pre-requisites, same study period and same score requirements. You will even still have to sit for the TOEFL. I know because I am a citizen myself. It gives you almost no advantage at all.

I'm not able to help you out much on the post-baccelortae programs, but I am sure if you ask any of the admission offices of the schools you plan on applying to, they would help you out better.

Good Luck.
