So far I shadowed one optometrist who has a private practice. That was a great experience and I learned a lot. I just set up a shadowing at a retail vision center - Walmart. I'm looking forward to this too so I can see what the difference might be. Plus, the other OD that I shadowed was a man, and this OD is a woman. I was kind of hoping to be able to shadow a man and a woman. I'm not really sure why, but I guess just to see how each of them interacts with the patients.

Nice!

Is the first optometrist you shadowed the only optometrist at that private office or does he own the practice with another optometrist?

This probably seems like a silly question but is the practice in a rural setting or in the city?

Any tips you learn from him? How long did you shadow him and do you plan to go back?

I hope you keep this thread updated once you shadow at Walmart's Vision Center. I'd love to hear how different it is. 🙂

The first optometrist I shadowed was the only optometrist there at the time. His father was also an optometrist, but has retired. Recently he hired another OD to work for him, but that was after I shadowed him. I shadowed him for about 4 hours I think. He had to go somewhere around lunch time so I had to leave then. I'm not sure if I'm going to go back shadow him or not. I would rather shadow a woman who has a private practice instead. I'm not really sure why - maybe just to see if she does anything differently.

This optometrist's practice is in a rural setting, probably about an hour from the closest big city.

I'll let you know how the Walmart shadowing goes. I'm going there this Saturday.

So how'd it go? I'm going to shadow an OD at Wal-Mart later this week and I was just kind of wondering what to expect. I feel kind of bad about going because I don't really want to go or have any interest in corporate optometry but schools like that we get a feel for the different types of practice settings.
