Wow. After receving all the UC secondaries and 4 interviews (at non-UC schools) so far, I received my first rejection (from Vanderbilt.) It was somewhat of a shock because my numbers were decent and I thought there was a good chance I'd get an interview. At the same time, I guess it's a good reality check that will keep me from getting overconfident. Afterall, if you apply to 25 schools like I did, there's a 99% chance you'll be rejected by at least a few of the schools outright. On the bright side, I didn't have to waste any time and more importantly money to interview there only to get waitlisted/rejected afterwards. Hopefully this won't become a trend. 😎

hi alex,

don't worry about it. it's just the random nature of the process. i've gotten interviews at ucsf, stanford, duke, columbia, and cornell but was rejected pre-interview from vandy, uchicago, and uc davis.

I've gotten one rejection so far and it was also from Vandy. I was similarly surprised, because I have pretty decent numbers and I really wasn't dying to go to that school anyway. Let's hope that they were those "oh, this person is probably using us as a safety school, so let's not waste their time" rejections. 😀

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I've already concluded the process can be equated to a crapshoot. Basically, the better your numbers, the more times you get to roll the dice per school. Sometimes, you can roll the dice several times and still get bad results.

The joke will be on them if you get into UCSF, Duke, etc. and they rejected you without an interview.

My numbers are good but not THAT good (definately not high enough to be considered overqualified for their school.) On the other hand, are you from Tennessee? If not, our being non-state residents may have had something to do with it. Perhaps they figure we'd get into and prefer to go to our state schools. Of course, being from Cali, they'd be assuming a lot about my chances.

I got my first rejection really early on (Mayo) and I was actually excited. It was a signal that the process had actually begun! Weird, I know. You just expect it and it's not so bad. I got my second one from Albany a couple weeks ago and that one wasn't so bad either. I think post interview rejections will be hard for me because I may take them personally. I'll think to myself: "How can anyone NOT like me? I'm great!!"

Haha... but we'll see. So, moral of the story is: it's not too bad. 2 down, 18 to go! AND, to make things worse, I've only had 2 interviews while everyone around me has seemingly had a million. Again, we'll see 😉

the first couple were kind of depressing....but now that ive lost count (double digit rejections...) its like whatevs...

its nice to see that i can finally stop waiting on some of the schools i applied to. gives me a sense of closure i guess.

Having applied to 25 schools, I'll be happy to interview at 8-10 and be accepted at 3. I don't think those are unreasonable expectations, are they? I'll let you know in 3-4 months. 😀
