Got My Schedule!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How 'bout startin' off by calling it PEDS like us here UH-MAR-UH-KUNS!(in my best hillbillie accent)!

Just kidding! Good luck Dr. Cox, you'll do fine!. Oh and incidentally, I didn't forget about that AMSA thing, just waiting on a response from nationals! 😀 😎 🙂

Enjoy the squaking chickens in Paeds/Peds 😀 At least they aren't parisites anymore 😱

Good Luck and enjoy Dr. Cox! 😉

I am on call the first night. Today is my last weekday off until the end of December.

Not trying to be silly or funny,

but when you are working, ask to be called Dr. Kim or Dr. C

Dr. Cox sounds like a porno name.

Dr. Kim
What is your call schedule? Q3? Do you know at all how your schedule is going to be (sick days, day off, vacation, hours). Just curious. Thanks.

Its q3 on most rotations although CV has traditionally been 24 on/24 off but they are thinking of revising that to q3 as well.

We get 3 weeks of vacation per year, which must be taken in 1 week blocks, cannot be taken before August 3rd or during June (for current residents), cannot be taken if you are the only intern on the service and of course, must be approved. The vacation week starts Friday night at 1800 hours and ends with morning rounds the Saturday 1 week later (ie, you don't get to include the weekend).

Weekends - we are "guaranteed" one weekend off per month but we'll see how that goes.

The hours vary depending on the rotation and how busy the service is, but in general they say resident rounds are at 5:30-6:00 - sometimes you have to come in early to round before the attending and senior residents and sometimes you can have medical students do it for you! 😀 Leaving depends on your work load, and service again. I expect anywhere from 80-110 hours per week.

Sick days - haven't heard about any but I'm sure they are mandated by law to have some. We are given 2 personal days per year - ie, to have your car serviced, etc. but not sure how you schedule those either. Orientation for all residents is next Friday so I'm sure they'll go over housewide stuff like that then.

Hope this helps!

Only to perverts! 😉 I haven't had anyone make fun of my name since junior high honestly.

Well, there is another Dr. Cox on Surgery as well (also female) and another Kim, so I'm sure it will take getting some used to for the staff as to which one of us is which.

I've been behind on the residents forum....

Just wanted to wish you GOOD LUCK, Dr. Cox!!! 😀

Been nice hearing from you Kimberli. You will not have time for SDN anymore. Until you get smart and switch to path that is. Just teasing. 😛

Thanks Kim. Good luck to you, and hope your still around these boards to let us know how everything is going.

Maybe that'll be my 2nd career - after I retire from Surgery! Since you'll have all the time in the world, "Mr. q7 from home", you'll have to monitor shenanigans here on the forum for us! 😀

Funny you say that Kimberli, one of the incoming residents in my group is a general surgeon. He just got sick of it and decided to go back to do a path residency. Personally, I would think it would be hard to give up the money to go back to do another residency.

Give up money? Heck, with call from home at q7 I could STILL WORK as a surgeon on my nights and do a path residency! 😉

Kimberli,

Good luck!

I start my internship in 10 hours. Words of solace from my new senior were as follows (after she told me I was picking up 7 patients right away with more to follow in just 2 days): "Don't worry; it takes patients a long time to die! You won't kill anyone in your first day... even if you make a mistake, you'll have time to fix it!"

In a strange, perverse way, these words were comforting. I just know I am going to like being on this senior resident's team -- she is da bomb!

Thanks Ana...

I hope my team is as understanding as yours! I have 1 week left before starting and the wonderful thing about Paeds Surgery is that kids are generally harder to kill than sickly adults (albeit it does depend on the reason the child is admitted to Surgery).

Good luck and please keep in touch with us here and let us know how things are going! 😀

Hey Guys,

I just flew in last night after a wonderful month's holliday in Ireland. We had a PGY1 orientation today. I'm lucky - I dont' have to report for service until tuesday. My first rotation is IM, but i'm on a quiet service. Nice way to get my feet wet. Then i have gen surg for 6 months!

Life is great!

Thanks George; I'll try but I'm sure I'll be so nervous that I won't get a wink of sleep. What rotation are you starting on?

PS. I think I'll go home now and prance around in my new LONG lab coat. 😉
