Thanks, I appreciate your thinking.

Think in terms of your ECs and personal traits, what makes you unique as an applicant, and bring attention to that.

Diversity does not always only mean the race card.

Diversity may be the difference between a 35 year old nurse who's been in the medical profession of nursing for 10 years vs. the traditional student who went straight to med school.

It may be something as simple as having a hobby like being a church or concert pianist or being on broadway or having chosen some unique major that most other premeds won't have. It is far more then being this race vs. that race.

I'd try to think to all the stuff you've done, your personal interests, goals, and overal personality about what makes you different from the rest of your peers.

ooh me too me too!!

I'm a little confused... I submitted my applications yesterday and I just received secondaries... from 2 schools NYCOM and GWSOM (george washington)...

When I look at my AMCAS application it states that I don't have my transcripts in... But I sent them out a month ago...

What do you guys think?? It just seems odd I could get secondaries if my stuff hasn't been verified... do they just want my money???

When u submit ur AMCAS, schools can still get your email address to send you material. However, they do not actually start to review your application until they get the verfied AMCAS + secondary + LOR

I posted this as its own thread but no one helped....

For these questions:

2. In what collegiate extracurricular activities did you engage?*
Enter your response in list format using commas. LIMIT WRITING TO 760 CHARACTERS.

3. Please list collegiate honors, awards, and memberships in honorary societies*
Enter your response in list format using commas. LIMIT WRITING TO 345 CHARACTERS.

Did you just list what you basically had on your AMCAS....I listed everything I've done/received on my AMCAS app. and have nothing to add here???

Also, for this:

If you have additional information that you would like to include with your application, compose a document offline in a word processor and upload it here. Use this uploaded document to record any information that does not fit into the application form, including additional majors or colleges. The only exception is courses that do not fit into the course history pages. For courses that do not fit into the course history pages, upload a document at the bottom of the Additional Course History section.

Can you upload any essay or anything you want.....or JUST what did not fit into their application???

Lastly, for the Additional Course History page, did you just leave this blank? Again, I listed all my courses on AMCAS.....except I have one course that I listed for this coming fall that I have substituted with another one....should I just put the new course down??

- Leave additional course history blank - that was to be filled out when they originalyl wanted us to lsit all opur courses, and courses that didnt fit would go here. However, this may still apply to you if you have other transripts from other schools...I'm not sure.

- The additonal information is for stuff taht is not reflected at all in your AMCAS or the rest of the secondary. This may be stuff such as life experiences, obstacles, or anything that ADCOM should know to better understand your situation. In my case, I used it to discuss future plans as I will be graduating early. So, if you have an essay that reflects soemthing totally different about you, then yes, use it. If it is another essay from another school that jsut talks about an activity in detail, then probably not as this is material for interview and already discussed on your AMCAS.

- For the extracurrics and awards, yes, you can repeat them, and this is your chance to prioritize them as well. The question is asking about stufff related to your campus, however, so leave out jobs or activities that you did on your own. An intramural sport, debate team, or being part of a student interest board would be valid here.

nah some schools give secondaries based on preliminary data (contact info). USF does something like that. Instead of doing the screening themselves, they look at the prelim data and send an email to the applicants to tell them to see if they meet the criteria 3.0 and above in both BCPM and overall gpa and 24 MCAT. For postbacs, they look at the new GPA rather then averaging it. But again, point here is they tell you to check the req and make sure you meet it and send an email back to them. then they send the secondary. Other schools do something similar to to this as well.

Thanks a lot for the input! Originally, I was going to use an essay from another school for the additional information part, but it is only expanding on AMCAS info. Do you think it's important to think of something new and worthwhile to put here, or is it fine to leave it blank?

I want everyone to note that Jefferson's optional essay has a maximum of about 500 words but the directions say to write a brief essay of 250-350 words.

Also, has anyone heard anything or seen anything from Michigan State? I'm interested to know how they screen or if they screen.

its fine to leave it blank, if you believe that you have put everything significant on your AMCAS. Basially, if you think that the college has a lot of good material, from your supp. app and AMCAS, that they can ask you questions about at your interview, you're fine.

Just the email asking for $$$ before they'll look at my app.

They do screen (after you pay,) but I'm not sure what the criteria is.

500 characters I think, not 500 words.

Just got SUNY Downstate (via email), although I think their secondary was already available on the web.

Anyone just receive a Pittsburgh Interview invite without completing the secondary yet as well? I thought it odd but I'll take it!

with this and chicago on sequential days, I'm feeling pretty great 🙂.

wow, congrats! I hope I hear from Pitt soon. They're sort of becoming one of my top choices. Was the interview invite via email?

Wow!

I just got an email from Mayo inviting me to submit LOR's and schedule a phone interview!!!!!

you are on a roll!!! Congratulations!!!!

UWash MSTP

"Your application was deemed competitive. We now require additional information from you to complete the application process. Start your supplementary application now"

I just got my second email about the army program. Yeah, right, like I'm going to join the army now, with the way our soldiers are being treated. Maybe if they stopped transporting troops in desert with light armored amphibious assault vehicles, or, I don't know, gave them proper uniforms and equipment, maybe then they'd be able to recruit more people????

/rant...I'm just upset over what's going on over there.

yeah, i got the army email too . . although luckily it is put directly into a spam folder 🙂

NO WAY!!! did you get it by email?

Question:::

On the Wash U secondary where it asks for a Dean's certification- do I need to get one from the college I took classes at while in high school??

Hey, kids who got UCLA secondaries - was it by mail or email? Also, what are your stats?

I am just curious (although I'm sure you have stated this about 50 times elsewhere on the forum) when your AMCAS was verified, or when Mayo received you payment? Just curious about when I can expect news...

So i heard loyola screens and i haven't gotten an invite from them so far and i heard people have gotten loyola secondary invites....does it look like they possibly screened me out? I have stats within their average and above? Anyone else in my shoes?

Congrats!!!

When did you send in your check & receive the confirmation email? I've been wondering how long the process will take.

Thanks! I sent the check 7/14, I believe, and got the confirmation of receipt 7/21.

Oh, and I think my AMCAS was processed 6/23... all the dates are in my mdapplicants link in my sig.

I just got Loyola yesterday; I wouldn't be worried yet.

I sent my check on 7/22 (received email on 7/21) and received confirmation on 7/29.

I guess I'm still have some time to wait. :scared: I sure wish I had more science fiction & fantasy research experience though. Then I'd probably be sitting pretty! 😀

AMCAS verified on 7/18. I haven't heard anything and I'm not sweating it... yet!

😀 😛 😎 Such diversity I can bring to the school of my choice...

Just got VCU!!!! yay! Im out of state!!! verified 6-23 or something!

That is nothing to scoff at. I think it will definitely help at some places.... So I was teasing a little bit, but with a large degree of sincerity. 👍

Sorry about the panic, ya'll. Again, regarding UCLA secondaries. Could it be that only MSTP secondaries were sent out? I have another MSTP friend with a secondary. Did any straight-out MD candidates receive secondaries? And again, if you did, by email? And what are your stats?

if you get screened out of loyola, you know it...they send a letter either inviting you to apply or a rejection letter. in fact, if i remember right, the first rumblings we heard out of loyola was sdners who'd gotten rejections...the people getting secondaries came later...but i think at this point it's just taking time since they appear to actually look over our applications in the screening process rather than just a number cutoff...i'm a post-bac at loyola, but unfortunately haven't gotten any inside info...definitely not worried though...i haven't gotten anything yet either and i was verified in mid-june.

I figured I might get more replies if I posted my question on this thread:

For Wash U's secondary essay that reads: "(optional) Do you have unique experiences or obstacles that you have overcome that were not covered in your application about which you would like to inform our Admissions Committee?"

If I don't have anything else to add from my AMCAS, do you think it would hurt to draw attention to and elaborate on my best experiences that I did list on AMCAS? For example, on AMCAS, I only had enough room to describe the specifics of my research in the experiences section, but in this essay I would describe what I've learned from my research, etc. What does everyone think?

Personally, I would interpret the optional essay as a chance for people who are applying disadvantaged or those who have had a hardship or medical illness to explain their situation.
So I would say no to writing in the box.

I think for other boxes that ask for "Any additional info" that your extra essay would fit but specifically not this one.
