Personally, I would interpret the optional essay as a chance for people who are applying disadvantaged or those who have had a hardship or medical illness to explain their situation.
So I would say no to writing in the box.

I think for other boxes that ask for "Any additional info" that your extra essay would fit but specifically not this one.

I wasn't sure what they meant by "unique experience"......does this just mean disadvantaged then? What did everyone else do with this one?

I talked about an activity that I felt was very rewarding...good luck! I didn't interpret it as just referring to someone who was disadvantaged in some way. They did say "unique experience" after all...

I received Northwestern's and Tufts' today...if anyone was waiting for either of those.

JUST FINISHED DAVIS'S MONSTER SECONDARY!

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

. . . time for a Newcastle. Who's with me?!

Hey kids! Just wonderin if anyone has heard from the following schools: Brown, Drexel, Mount Sinai, University of Rochester. I was verified like June 14th and I've heard from everybody except for those 4. Do they screen? Thanks!

Rochester sent snail mail to everyone. You might want to check your permanent address mail b/c that's where they sent it

Just got University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine, woohoo!

Dated 8/2
Postmarked 8/3
Arrived 8/4
Due 8/16

All by SNAIL MAIL.

And essays to be TYPEWRITTEN -- who does that these days, in times of online forms and PDFs?!

Wow, UH really does make it extremely tough for OOS applicants. Good luck.

I'm so behind you!!!! But then again, u got many UC secondaries before the rest of us.

I'm held back by this monster essay for influential person. I can't imagine not writing about family because, let's face it, they spent 22 years with me and of course bestowed their values and characters on me as i am my parents son. What's a good way to write the essay?

Just got Loyola!!! yay! When I applied the first time two years ago, I got a flat our rejection - no secondary. yay! It was kinda sad reading that they only interview 15% of those invited to submit a secondary. Thats a bit low, especially from a pre-selected group. VCU interviews 60% which makes the odds much better... good luck to everyone still waiting.

has anyone heard from USUHS, Wright St., UChicago, or UPitt?

if so, when did you hear from them and when was your AMCAS verified?

Many have heard from UChicago, they give out secondaries every 3 or so days. I was verified 7/6, and finished their secondary two weks ago

I'm a huge Daddy's Little Girl and, not only that, my dad has a great "rags to riches" story which, of course, inspires a certain amount of work ethic/humility/dedication in his offspring. So I did it on him. I know a lot of people will probably be doing family stuff (of course, it does say ONE person) but if you're answering the question honestly, it probably WILL be Mom or Dad. Are you going to do all of the "optional" stuff at the end?? I didn't. . . 🙁

Nope, They dont apply to me. Socio economical has to be stated in AMCAS so i'm thinking this is the URM stuff. The PSTP i am not interested in so why bother writing one for that.

I guess I have to spin my essay for the influential person into an interesting story. Honestly, how can this essay tell them if we're worthy to be physicians?!?!

Still working on UCD...ugh, almost finished though. What are you talking about? UCD is the roughest ever with 9 essays! I actually loved UCSD's autobiography. That's my fav secondary by far out of all secondaries I've got. B/c it's such an open-ended question and you can go on and on about your life story 🙂

i just got the UCSD invite and my first interview invite at SUNY upstate... anyone interviewing on Sept. 7? 😛

Update:

Harvard secondary will be out by the end of the month.

Emory secondary will be out next week.

I received the Wake secondary via email today.

AMCAS verified 7/15
Wake "we have your primary and will evaluate" email received 8/3

3 week deadline.

was it the ucsd invite for a secondary?? and when were u verified?

Apparently UCSD verifies your coursework pre-secondary. I just heard from them saying that I need a third quarter of O-chem. This is irritating because:
- The standard O-chem series at my undergrad was two quarters and covered the same material as the three-quarter series everywhere else.
- I also took two quarters of P-chem and three of biochem.
- When I called, she said that I needed 8 semester units of O-chem, and labs would not count toward this requirement.
- I'm about to finish a PhD in structural biology.
So, I now need to tell the a specific O-chem class with number and dates that I will enroll in, or they won't further process my app. Sorry for the somewhat off-topic rant.

8 semester units not counting labs?? aren't most lectures 3 units? making it 6 total without labs?

yes, the UCSD invite was to fill out their secondary. i was complete around 6/28...

Anyone else get Sinai yet? I'm thinking I'll get it Monday.

This probably explains why they take so damn long to dole out secondaries. How did you hear from them? E-mail? Phone call?

I'm in a similar situation. My post-bacc science classes were all 3 units instead of 4, so I have 6 units of each and most schools want 8.. i'm not sure where to get 2 unit classes in ochem, gchem & physics.. or when I'll be able to take them while working full time, in addition to the upper-division bio and biochem that UCI wants..

2 lecture classes x 3 hours each = 6 hours
2 labs x 1 hour each = 2 hours
2 + 6 = 8 required

UCSD does not count labs for the required 8 credits, according to the woman with whom I spoke.

Hmmm that's weird. I think I recall UCSD, being one of those schools where you have to take classes like molecular bio or biochem, etc. Long long long long time ago, when I was considering cali schools cuz of a guy that I liked in Cali, I visited their websites. Anyhow........

I recall UCSD having been one of those schools with a bunch of extra prereq requirements beyond the basics. I wonder if they mean things like molecular bio, biochem, intermediate inorganic chem, biooranic chemistry, etc.

Actually, you know what it was either UCSD or UC Davis that I recall having the extra prereq courses. I'm not sure, which one but I think it was one of the two.

HMM...
What would most people do for physics? I am a major and I haven't seen any other pre-meds in upper levels.

Edit: I just realized that it might only be for chem and bio. Disregard if this is true.

Have secondaries for these schools come out yet? If so, can someone post the essays for them?

Thanks! 🙂

Does anyone know the word limit on the essays for the Rush secondary? I have not created a log in yet b/c I didn't want my 30 days to start until I had most of the essays done. I could not find anything about the word limit on any of the other instructions they provided. Thanks!

1000 characters each essay.
