I don't know if anyone else has posted this yet, but I just received the Michigan State secondary via email this morning.

"Please give me a secondary" payment made on 7/25. I happened to be online online and paid within minutes of receiving the request.

what's it like? I'm a resident and also paid the same day

I'm brand new to this forum thing, so here goes:

Submitted amcas: August 1st
Verified: August 10th

Secondaries received:

Cornell
Baylor
Case Western
Stanford
Emory
Medical College of Wisconsin
Temple

so much work to do!!!!

For Hawaii, does the course verification form go to everyone that got a secondary or is it another screening point after the secondary? I just got the form today, and would like to know if they're really interested or not.

Has anyone who turned in their AMCAS around July 30 gotten it verified?

Submitted the last secondary I had in my inbox. I have not heard from one school, but one more secondary isn't too much work. I'm so excited to be done with secondaries! 😀

Anyone heard from Harvard yet?!?

Well done! 👍

Unfortunately, I have a looooong way to go.

Heard that the one school only issues secondaries to those they invite to interviews. So no worries there.

Is anyone still waiting to hear from Duke?

I guess I'll enter my info too. 🙂

AMCAS submitted: 7/21
AMCAS verified: 7/28

Received Secondaries:

Emory
Boston U
Georgetown
Albert Einstein
Jefferson
Mount Sinai

Put on hold:

Wake Forest (need Aug MCAT scores)

Eagerly awaiting:

NYU
Tufts
Loyola
Vanderbilt

Speaking of NYU and Tufts, has anyone received secondaries from those schools who were verified around late July?? Neither of those schools screen, right? I've heard those two are quick secondaries so I'd love to get them soon. 😀

NYU DOES NOT SCREEN!!! Hence, if you look a few pages back you'll be able to get the link for their secondary. I'll see if I can find the post which has it, and post it here.

In regards to Vanderbuilt, you will not receive a secondary, unless they are also going to invite you for an interview. They only give to those that they want to interview.

Finally got OHSU! Now I'm waiting to hear from the last few screened secondaries. Many of which I'm not so sure I'll get.

Now if I could only catch up on the ones I do have! Damn those character limits. I loved the Davis secondary because I could ramble on. 🙂

OHSU? That's awesome! Did you get it today (sunday)? snail mail or email? thanks 🙂 and good luck!

Check travelocity and expedia first. Then, check the cheapest flights you find on the individual ariline websites to see if they're even cheaper there. Then, check all of the airlines not included on the travel sites. Don't forget JetBlue, Independence Air, Southwest, or Spirit. Out of the major liners, I often do best w/Airtran. Also, sale fares are released every Tuesday, so if you're not finding a price you can afford, wait and check again the next Tuesday.
StudentUniverse is a pretty good way to go. They just verify that you're a student first though (so if you're taking a year off, you're probably SOL). My last flight was a lot cheaper on SU than anything else.

Btw, SideStep will check several of the top travel sites for you simultaneously.

It must have come in the mail yesterday although I didn't check it until today. On the days I check the mail nothing comes. On the days I do I get several letters from schools. This process is driving me crazy!

There is hope for us non-californians...just approved for UCSD secondary on 8/13. They recieved AMCAS on 7/19.

Going out this week (hopefully): BU, AMC, GW, Brown
On the desk but untouched(all added 8/4): Rush(email on 8/8), Yale (email on 8/10) , Northwestern (email on 8/14)
Overall progress: 24 on AMCAS, 17 secondaries in, 10 returned

Goodness, LJDHC05 you are a lean mean 2ndary writing machine!! awesome work.

I got alot of secondaries done last week. So far, I've submitted NYU, Cornell, Columbia, UWash, Pritzer, and Northwestern. Einstein is going in the mail today. After payday (Thursday), I need to submit Maryland, Jefferson, Emory, BU, Temple, Tufts, and Mt. Sinai. I'm debating sending in the apps for Georgetown and Rosalind Franklin. I'm still waiting to receive Harvard's. Now if only my advisor would send my LORs, or atleast answer my e-mails and voicemail. 🙄

I submitted my AMCAS on June 4. I've received replies from everyone except Duke and Harvard. Mayo Phone interview is in 3 hours!!!! Interview at Indiana on Sept. 7. Has anyone heard from Duke? Harvard? Let me know.

Duke is definetely out (I did not apply there) but there are ppl on the forum who have said they got it. Harvard is not out as far as I know.

Had anyone heard that their file is complete from:

Tufts
BU
Johns Hopkins

THanks!

Nay on Tufts and BU... they have been quite silent.

I just found out UVA has still not recieved my letters of rec (I emailed them and asked) and it has been a month since I submitted my sec. I just requested the letters to be resent today, but the whole point in my submitting the sec early was to be reviewed early.

Will the committee still know I submitted the sec early? I wanted them to know I was excited about applying there, etc. I know this is over-analyzing, but all of my Dad's family is from VA and that is the school I really want to go to.

Thanks!

did anyone else get the extremely vague status update from VCU along the lines of:

we're interested in you but we may not get to interview you, we'll email you and let you know...

???? i wonder if everyone got this or just the people lower on the list....

Someone already posted a thread in the Pre-allo saying they got this...

I'm hoping to hear something from them soon...

When was your application deemed complete? Did they ever tell you? Mine should be complete, all LORs are sent, but I've yet to hear back from them.

I got an email from Johns Hopkins about being complete last week, but nothing from the other two. I submitted my secondary to JHU in the middle of July, along with my letters of rec.

Good luck!! 👍

Harvard isn't out yet. Some have heard from Duke - 8 essays! 😱
I was verified on 7/15 and have heard nothing from Duke yet.

Hey, what's up guys...glad I stumbled on these forums, they're a great resource. Anyway...

I've noticed that a lot of secondary questions are 100% copies of stuff on the amcas (e.g. explain your most important volunteer experience, why do you want to be a doctor, etc). In these cases, is it best to:

1) cut/paste directly from my amcas stuff, or
2) reword my amcas response, or
3) assume they've read my amcas and elaborate on my previous amcas answers?

I'm kinda getting the feeling that my actual amcas is not even going to be looked at at some schools, which means I need to repeat any experiences/honors/etc. that I actually want them to notice and incorporate them into my secondary responses...Any thoughts?

That is one thing that I like about Loyola's secondary essays. If you already answered the essay in your personal statement, they only have to write "Please refer to my AMCAS application."

I'd probably expand upon something in your AMCAS that was significant. For instance, if you went on some summer medical mission trip, and there were one or two profound situations that had a deep impact on you, then you may have only spoken in brief in the AMCAS. So for the essay you would further expand on those two situations.

BTW, everyone---every year-----says that most secondaries are just asking you to restate AMCAS.

In regards to the person that asked about Duke, some of the posters on here were saying that they've received it but it was annoying because there were toooooooo many essays to write. As per HMS, well rumors around SDN say that you HMS applicants will be waiting another month or so before you hear about secondaries or what not.

I got UCLA's secondary today via snailmail . . .they said I had been selected . . does anyone know if they screen for secondaries???

Yea UCLA screens for MD secondaries...(although maybe not for mstp, judging from the promptness and wording of my mstp secondary invite from them)

Got UCLA...have to check the status page, it won't come via email. I am out of state, FYI (though UCLA states no preference)

obviously I have not gotten UCSF...hahaha

I am brain dead - I can't think of anything to write for 2 of Duke's essays 🙁

23 - on AMCAS
2 - not completing till after 10/15
1 - sitting on my table (Duke)
1 - haven't heard from yet (Harvard)
19 - done/mailed/completed

I'm going to sleep ... ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

yay!!! just found out i got the UCLA secondary!! i checked the status page this morning and there was nothing.. checked again after lunch and now it says i've been approved since Friday. weird.

so my question now is are these essay questions optional or required? the website says "Please answer as many of the questions as you can" but the essays themselves don't say optional... I'm just curious since I really can't think of anything super meaningful to write for the "scholarly project" section...

I was mulling over that same question myself...

It seems like we should come up with *something* to write for each entry...esp since it only has to be 800 chars. I just have this bad feeling about leaving things blank...like it's an insult to the adcoms or something if they gave me a good opportunity to express myself and I ignored it. If you can find even a decent example for the prompt, then you could at least use it as a jumping off point to talk about other good qualities about yourself

...anyway, that's how I'm gonna try to fill a similar LA prompt for which I feel I don't have anything *stellar* to say. Good Luck!

hehe, people with stats like yours make me worry about my chances even more!! 😉 thanks for the input, I guess I'll have to come up with something, even if I did graduate over 5 years ago sans thesis/publication/major project...

I don't intend to write all of UCLA's essays. I didn't do any scholarly project either (not yet anyway). I wouldn't worry about leaving one or two blank since they go out of their way to tell you that it's ok.

I just got the UCLA sec today too. I'm from Minnesota so looks like they are expanding to beyond just CA applicants.

i got ucla too. woo hoo!
