I have received acceptance to both Goucher and UVA.

I have read a fair amount about the Goucher program on this forum (thanks pemulis), but wondered if anyone had thoughts on UVA.

I know it is a new program so not much info is out there!

Any advice, help or suggestions would be great!

Hi CrystalP,

I was accepted into the UVA program also. UVA is a great school -- Charlottesville is beautiful and it's a fantastic place to be an undergraduate. That said, the postbac program is in its infancy there, and it's run by Continuing Education people rather than dedicated pre-health staff. Plus, at UVA, you'd be taking classes with undergraduates, and the class sizes are large (think 400 people in gen chem and 250 people in organic chem, for example). For all intents and purposes, you'd be in the same boat as the hundreds of undergraduate premeds.

I am rather sad that UVA's program isn't of the same quality as Goucher's, as Charlottesville would be infinitely preferable to Towson.

That's my two cents...

I was accepted as well and plan to attend the innaugural year for a few reasons. 1. After talking w/the head of the program, they are in TIGHT coordination w/the medical school and actually have an MD from the school who will be the advisor for all with other profs and admins to help w/ the advising, committee issues, and help should we need it w/technical things. In fact, the assistant dean of admissions to the med school helped design the program. The classes will be with the undergrads but labs will be separate so it makes it much more intimate and structured. They also have coordinated with surrounding clinics and practices to help w/clinical opps and volunteer experiences. They have designed their program to be like Jhopkins and bryn mawr- They really want this first class to succeed so all energy from many outlets are taking place to help the post-bac class with medical school prep- if you have more questions feel free to PM.
