Hi,
I'm curious if there is such a thing and how it works. What's the pay, working condition, etc... You know the whole shebang.

Obviously you haven't been reading the military thread. Why would I ask this if I asked in the military thread? Maybe I was asking about civilian government dentistry.

Yeah there is. Indian Health Service, National Health Service, and a couple other Federal gubbermint agencies.

Lots of state govs also have similar health service programs.

I can't recall offhand what the terms of service, salary or benefits are though.

About $70,000 to $120,000 per year depending upon location and years of experience. Plus decent medical/disability/life insurance/retirement/401K benefits, school loan paybacks, no overhead, and minimal supervisory responsibilites.

Maybe YOU haven't been reading the military thread, because if you had you would know that I posted in that thread.

Besides all the stuff mentioned above is there any other form of Government dentistry. I heard from one of the dentist I shadowed of a community center type of setting.

I know a dentist that works in one of those. 350 per day, Mon thru Friday, 9 to 6.

I heard pay was pretty atrocious.

I hear that prison dentistry can be a pretty good gig for the right person. ~100-120k+, great benefits, good pension, no office crap to deal with, virtually no insurance/malpractice worries. Just go to work, collect your money and go home.

Personally, I like the idea of running my own business, but that doesn't sound like a bad deal at all; does it? 🙂

Prison dentistry? Now I've gone too far:scared:

Well, I guess you'll be busy. I just saw a program on the prison system in LA wednesday on the History Channel. No need to worry about getting patients😀

Now why can't they use these patients for dental school clinics. You know locate the dental schools near them. The schools are already in crappy neighborhoods.

Lots of dental schools see prisoners...I've seen several---shackles, jumpsuit, guards and all...its not uncommon....many OMS residents rotate through various prisons to extract teeth for them as well...not to mention fix their facial fractures and dental abscesses at state hospitals...lots of fights and bad dental infections in prison...not to mention bruxism 🙂

A friend of mine worked at a mental institution for 20-odd years. He loved it mostly for the reasons given above (benefits, less hassle, less insurance/malpractice) and was able to retire early.

That's scary. How did he manage to put up with such patients??:scared:

Generous administration of nitrous oxide 😴

Don't you wish you could do that on kids?
No wonder a lot of dentist don't want to treat kids.:meanie:

blankguy, you again?

You know nitrous oxide works much better on children than adults. A lot of dentists use it on thier younger patients. It really helps and is very safe. Some parents are leary but when properly explained, they usually give consent.

Am I causing trouble again?😕

But really, I've noticed certain dentist do not like to treat children is this the reason why they don't treat children(won't open mouth,etc...) or is there another reason?
