My wife is one of the (un)lucky ones graduating dental school this year. She is interested in applying to pedo down the road, perhaps in 2-3 years. As she looks at different GP jobs, she obviously wants to maximize her exposure to treating children. That being said, does anyone know how common /doable it is for pediatric dental offices to hire a GP to work alongside the pediatric dentist? Or if anyone had any specific recommendations on potential avenues to look at for a GP interested in pedo (I'm talking other than the obvious family GP practice that has a high volume of kids). Just brainstorming with all this time we've found on our hands.

unless you are in an area with severe shortage of pedo dentists, I don't see a pedo office offering a spot....realistic avenue is to work 2-3 years are a GP in GP setting and apply.

it's hard, but not impossible. If a pediatric dentist has multiple offices and one pediatric dentist (owner) does all oral and IV sedations, then that pediatric dentist is willing to hire a general dentist because by hiring general dentist, owner gets advantages of keeping root canals, crowns of permanent teeth of teenagers as well as gaining more patient pool by having their parents. Mostly, pediatric dentist will hire general dentist for 2 days/ week to see how general dentist is dealing with kids, patient pool, and speed, later he can hire full time only if general dentist is producing enough production. I have lots of general dentists, who has been practicing part time in pediatric offices or some can hire you full time only if production is high.

I’m a general dentist and I have worked in a pediatric practice since graduation 3 years ago. And recently I got accepted in to a pedo residency starting in July!!!! My program liked the fact that I already had experience working with kids. It is very doable just keep searching for the right job to get experience.

When I was looking for a job after graduation, I searched for pediatric jobs even though I was a general dentist. I found that many jobs advertise for a pediatric dentist but in the description stated that they will train the “right” general dentist.

As a new grad I worked for a multi-provider + all specialty corporate office as a GP. When the pediatric dentist retired, I took over her position. It might be trickier to be hired right out of school, but it's possible

I'm a general dentist and run two pediatric practices. No one that works for me is a pediatric dentist. You really don't have to specialize in it to make good money. I don't do general or oral sedation.

I worked at a school-based mobile dentistry company almost right out of residency in 2017, which was a great experience. It was still limited in what I could due to it being mobile, in NY (which has crazy restrictions), inside classrooms, and meant for GP's, so I managed to land a job at a non-profit treating foster kids. This is all in NYC by the way. So the jobs are there, but you have to constantly be on the prowl. I managed to get 2 interviews at peds programs this year, so your wife's plan can be done!

Dont u need to be a specialist to run pediatric practices

As long as it’s not advertising as a pediatric dental office it’s fine. You can have a general dental practice limited to children patients. The key is as long as there is no shadow of a doubt that the child will be seeing a general Dentist and not a pediatric dentist, then you can avoid board and licensing complaints.

Is it more profitable to see pediatric patients?
