GPA 3.0

I am so nervous and upset as I have a 3.0 overall GPA and perhaps a 3.2 Science GPA. I just took the MCAT's this April, and I think I did well, aiming for 30+ It seems like all these Med Schools want GPA 3.5 and higher. Do I have a shot? And if yes, what schools will I have a better chance at... PLEASE HELP

You might want to take some post-bac courses to strengthen your GPA. If you do that, it shouldn't be a problem. I also had a 3.0 GPA at the end of my undergrad, so I went back and did my masters in chemistry (GPA 3.8) so it would no longer be an issue. You don't necessarily have to do a masters, just taking some additional courses (preferably science) should do the trick.

1. Look in your MSAR and check out Albany, Penn State, Tulane, and maybe Georgetown. If you're an URM perhaps try Meharry, Howard, and Morehouse. Also maybe look for schools that take great research and EC's into account (e.g. Rochester). ***Pleaaaase note that alot of us have been traumatized <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> by the FL schools that require a minimum 3.3 (someone correct me on this if it's lower or higher please 🙂 )for their cutoff.

2. What about DO schools?! I consider it a big blessing I got in last year with an almost similar situation as yours...but my sci GPA was like a 3.0 and I had a 3.24 cum. Apply to a bunch of DO schools as well if you're going ahead and applying this year.

3. I also agree with looking into the post-bac programs. Unless you feel you have other characteristics that really stand out in your application (research, EC's, etc.) you might want to try these to boost your GPA and application power.

Well, ok...I would apply to a load of DO schools...some med schools, and apply to a load of post-bacc programs. Don't forget that if you rocked out on your MCAT (30+) that MD med schools consider that with a low GPA! Good luck to you! I wish you the best :wink:

Thanks guys for the advise. I started a MS in Software Eng and have a 4.0 GPA. Will the admission committee care about it?

I don't think that graduate coursework will be included in your AMCAS science GPA. It will look good that you've done well in grad school, but your undergrad GPA will still look the same.

Just a steady and consistent diet of 3.6-3.8 would be more than enough to make up for the weak first year. Besides, schools understand that freshman is a transition period. It's going to be okay, as long as you work hard and HAVE A LOT OF GOOD EXTRACURRICULARS!!! VERY IMPORTANT. Distinguish yourself from other premeds. That should be Rule No.1

They kicked my a$$ to the curb very quickly.•••••STRAIGHT UP! i'm taking offense to some of you punks posting that Tulane is an easy school. they took my lunch money and punched me in the nose Real Fast. and go look at their average stats. they're not low. plus they consider themselves a very good school. if it IS low, then it's full of people from great undergrads.
