Gpa 4.0? How Do You Do It?!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Study 5 hours per day.

Do not watch TV.

Avoid any science or engineering major.

G'd luck.

(Seriously, just enjoy your time, live a balanced life and study as hard as you can without killing yourself. )

I strongly disagree with this advice. I think EC's not only separate out students with similar numbers, but unique EC's can make an underdog applicant more competitive than someone with higher numbers. I did some EC's that I was extremely passionate about, and yes, the amount of time I spent in them affected my GPA slightly, but I have never had any regrets about that. I had some amazing experiences that I would not trade in for a 4.0.

My point was that you can have all the EC's in the world but if you have a 3.0 and a 25 MCAT you won't get accepted anywhere except the Carrib.

I've been thinking about unplugging my TV but I just can't!

But as already said by many, I think it has to do with time. If you actually use the time you are given, and actually sit down and focus, then you will do well. People who do very well aren't necessarily "smart" but rather they are the ones who invest time, which is much harder than it sounds.

Oh yeah - Stay away from the competitive kids. They get me so angry, sometimes I find that I don't try because I want to be UNLIKE them.

I'd rather have a 3.8 and earn it than getting a 4.0 by threatning professors. 😎

I had a friend who would go to her professors' office hours and harress them EVERY DAY until they changed her grades. She once hounded this guy for months, even through the summer break, until he changed her grade from a C to a B purely out of frustration. She wasn't a pre-med or anything, but she sure was nuts...

YES!! I knew a girl just like that too, she would even make annoying crying noises in the office and not let anyone else talk to the prof..! lol.

I'm a freshman. That having been said (haha), I pretty much know what I have to do to get a high GPA, but I haven't implemented it yet. Basically, you have to be able to balance social life with academics and other important facets of life because you can't have one without the other(s), and an imbalance could prove to be detrimental to your mental health 😀. But there's something that I've been seeing repeatedly on this thread but I'd like to reiterate it because it is very true: Those with 4.0s or GPAs near that achieved them with purely hard work. You can't drift through college like you did in high school (or at least I did). You must be active in your learning and study consistently, never letting yourself get behind lectures. Learn to like learning--it's very difficult to be doing something almost EVERY DAY for the next four years of your life that you utterly despise. If you're having difficulty, feel free to use competition to your advantage. Afterall, "if you're not studying, someone else is."

To boil down all that I've said into something a little more palatable, you need to study consistently . I do quite well on tests if I don't study; I have a certain level of innate intelligence. However, there many, many things which I do not already know, and the only way you can learn them is through study. It's amazing how well I even if I put in only one hour of studying. With others, it may be more difficult. But everyone has to study.

Yup, I'm proud to say that I really haven't watched TV (except for the news) in three years, but the amount of movies and whatnot (minus the porn, you naughty child) that I download more than makes up for that. No offense, dmtang 😀.
