My former org chem classmate graduated with a 3.52 gpa in biology after going to school for 7 years. He completely screwed up the first three years (only managed to achieve 12 credits), got suspended for one year and attended a community college during that time, came back for 3 years and had a 3.7 gpa for his final 80 credits (not including transfer credits from community college).
He told me that when he applied to med schools his gpa was listed as 2.3 overall and 2.5 BCMP. This is because he failed numerous courses during the first three years but then repeated them when he came back and got A's. AMCAS averaged out those grades and that's why his gpa came out so low.
Anyways, last year he applied to over 50 allopathic schools in the U.S. and only got two interviews. At one of the interviews he was told that they would definately accept him if his gpa wasn't so low. He was told that the reputation of the school might get destroyed if they accepted him. And the other school accepted him because he scored a 34 on the mcat, had a lot of ec's, excellent lor's, and he did really well at the interview.
