GPA and the importance of undergraduate school reputation?

ok how about instead of just looking at your school's reputation.....looking at your academic profile? i mean a person majoring in psychology will have a higher gpa than a person who majored in chemical engineering. schools should definitely take this into account...

This is a good question-one I have come across in other threads.

I think its obvious that if you have a 3.91 GPA in Anthropology and did well in your science prereqs-that is going to stand out more than a 3.4 majoring in Biochemistry.
When comparing two candidates with similar GPA's but one majored in Biochem and the other in English- then I think it could be a decision maker-but then again, it depends on the school.

I think the best advice for anyone is to major in something they know they are interested and can do well in, and really crack the whip in the science classes.

You have just described a set that includes only the caribean and foreign medical schools.
 JK, kind of. MCAT and GPA will be the single most important thing for you to get in at any US MD or DO school. Although there are always the stories about the URM with horrible stats who gets into school somewhere. I've never personally known one but URM's are scarce in Utah. 😀[/QUOTE]

😱 Yes, actually I think you may be right that no matter how much a school may like you in the interview and want to enroll you, they are going to take the guy next to you with similar EC's and a higher MCAT. D@mn overachievers! 😛

But, I'll just have to see about this after the interviews- I think I should get some honest feedback after I get in/don't get in.
