hello all~~

just another prospective student trying to get some assurance. i recently applied to dental school and got an email verifying my GPA. my science gpa is 3.06 with my overall at 3.27 and BCP of 2.98. not that it was a shock but just made me get upset me today.

so i guess i applied early and i have most of my stuff in and done so hopefully i'll be an early batch. i have a DAT score of 21/20/19 and i'm just not really confident in my chances this cycle even though i applied super early.

i applied to...
temple
tufts
maryland
bu
nyu
rutgers
pitt
penn (just b/c my mom made me lol)

also, i have over 600+ hours of clinical experience and shadowing.

what do u think my chances are? sorry guys..to ask you this question. perhaps a better question that I'd like some clarity is which GPA do dental schools place more weight on. Obviously they see all 3 GPA's but a sub 3 GPA just seems so terrible.

All three are considered.

Make sure you continue to take classes to boost your GPA.

When they calculate your GPAs did they just take it straight from your transcript, or did they "standardize" it (A+ = 4.33, A = 4.0, etc) and then calculate it. My school doesn't give you A's or B's. They just give you a number like 3.7 or 3.1.

Hey Glimmer1991,

If I already applied, how do I take classes now and show dental schools that I'm in them?

Relative importance of various selection criteria: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/2012-how-us-ds-rank-dat-gpa-other-selection-criteria.943474/. In general, sGPA > oGPA.

Did you apply to so few schools because you feel you have no shot this cycle? If your hope is to not have to delay a year, then your school list should be significantly expanded to 15-20+ schools. Your oGPA is a little low, but not terrible. The sGPA is worrisome, but since your DAT is above average, you might get interviews if the rest of your app is solid. Given the 600+ volunteer hours, one school you should definitely add is ASDOH. They emphasize volunteer work and are more forgiving when it comes to GPA/DAT.

@asdffff :If you already applied, email the schools and let them know that you enrolled in classes after submission, assuming that you did not use the spot for future/planned courses in the AADSAS application. You may or may not want to update the programs on your marks, however it may be redundant, as there will be an application update period (usually Nov-Feb?) where you re-submit transcripts and they will update your application with completed courses form the fall semester.

As others mentioned, all GPAs are favored. But the sciences are more favored over others

Were you not planning to take classes to raise your GPA?! It may very well be a "must."
