hey hows it going guys. i was hopeing to take a science gpa booster course next year. the thing is that on the registration website for my college, there are 2 biosci (biosci2, bio3, etc.) courses and the rest are all bio(ex: bio51, bio22, etc.). the biosci courses are for non bio majors (the courses dont meet any req's for the bio major). im majoring in econ so i can tak the biosci course if i want. but will this course count in my science gpa when i apply to dental school? basically, both have the word bio in the course name, but how does the aasda distinguish between them (or do they just treat them both as bio courses and hence both count in the science gpa)?

The biosci classes, while they may not count for biology majors, will count for your science gpa. I took a couple of science classes that were designated for non-biology majors only and I got science credit for it on my dental application. 🙂

thanks a lot guys i guess i just found a little something to help my gpa out next year

What about courses offered by the science departments that are not for Science students?
There are certain courses offered by my college that are essentially science, but for arts/commerce students with no science or math background. And these courses do not carry credit for science students. I am planning to take some of these courses as part of my post-bacc next year to boost the tired 'ol GPA.

But since these are labelled as 'biology' or 'microbiology' courses, they will still be considered as 'science' by AADSAS and dental schools right???

Some input would be appreciated.

Here is food for thought. Why don't you take some "challenging" classes like an upper level physiology, gross anatomy, or biochemistry class and ace it to really wow the adcoms! My science gpa sucked too, so I took an upper level physiology class this past semester with a professor that was supposedly known for not giving ANY A's out (most of the time). I got an A+ in the class!

....on the other hand, you could get a B and totally defeat the purpose :meanie: . For a non-science major, I imagine classes like that would be more difficult.

although this is a great idea to really pump your sci. gpa don't you guys think the adcoms will see this when they get your transcripts? don't get me wrong, i'm all for it, but yet on the other hand i wouldn't want them to toss my app b/c I'm trying to trick them! (or b/c i didn't take upper levels instead!)

little help please?

for me, i need it to boost the gpa a little bit to make up for 1 or 2 classes i didnt do so well in. however, i am still taking upper level courses with it. i am not just taking the class alone. i am balancing it with upper level courses.

Gee thats funny, I am a non-science major (Accounting). Difficult is relative. If the OP wants D-school bad enough he will go through the tougher route. I am applying this year, but I would be willing to bet that if the OP does get his gpa high enough to get looked at, the adcoms will see fluffer courses and not be too impressed. If the OP was to take some challenging courses and nail them (getting his app. looked at) it may be what gets the OP an interview.

Btw, I knew full well this professor's reputation before I took his class. A few people even tried to talk me out of taking it, I guess I have a hard head.

If this is the case I would have to think you will be alright, you may not even get asked about it at an interview. If you do get asked about it just be prepared to answer the WHY you took these classes and not something more difficult.

From all I've read over the past 2 yrs, taking the "tougher route" means almost nothing. The numbers are all that matter. This doesn't mean you can take 8 or 9 'easier' science classes to cancel out a 2.1 GPA in pre-reqs. I'd Take 3 or 4 easier sci classes and spread them out over a longer timeline. If you waited to the year before you apply and your schedule is choked full of easier classes, that may throw up a flag.
