I am aiming for a 34 MCAT, but my GPA is a 3.48... I was wondering what the GPA cut off was for most schools? BEcause if it's a 3.5, i'm thinking I should take another science class this quarter to boost it to a 3.5, just because of the "cut-off"? Honestly, I'm not looking into a "top" school.. anywhere is fine for me, but I'm just paranoid most schools won't even look at my app because of the GPA.

i heard the new MSAR also doesn't have the info for each school anymore.I have a 34 MCAT, but my GPA is a 3.48... I was wondering what the GPA cut off was for most schools? You're fine. Even top schools like UMichigan say that they don't consider OOS with below 3.2 sGPA, but I had a <3.2 sGPA from ug and still received their secondary. http://med.umich.edu/medschool/admissions/apply/path.html (it's step 2 in the flow chart)

Admittedly, 10th %ile GPA for matriculants there is a lot higher than 3.2....

At any rate, I think that's the highest GPA cutoff I saw this cycle actually posted on a website. Usually it's 3.0 that'll do it. And even then if you have unusual application qualities (e.g. 99%ile MCAT, non-trad with a lot of good work experience, etc), you have some leeway.

I know nothing about the new MSAR. Why do they keep changing it? 🙄

Thanks, but I read on other threads that NYU, for example, has 3.5 GPA cut off. Also, I know there isn't a chance I'd get into a CA school, but do they have high cut-offs? That's unfair, cuz I'll just be cut-off before they even look at the rest of my app..

As you mentioned in the first part of your post it will likely vary by school with most schools keeping their cut-offs undisclosed. As to the second half of your post, claiming that a cut-off is 'unfair' would be implying that your GPA is no fault of yours (and that there should be some semblance of fairness in this process).

It wouldn't surprise me at all if schools utilized cut-offs - they have a ridiculous number of applications to go through in a pretty limited amount of time, and they have to cull the herd some how. As aSag ("Saggy" is apparently the nickname 😛) mentioned, these cut-offs definitely wouldn't be published.

As to the fairness, you can think what you want, but, also as mentioned above, your GPA is reflective of your performance. The only one you can blame is yourself.

Ooohh Nick. You so Sassy!

OP, many people make it in with a GPA in that range. Just check with the schools that you want to apply to before you apply to find out their respective GPA cutoffs. Also, don't forget the usual -- Insightful, compelling personal statement / Commitment shown through ECs / Early Application / Strong Letters of Rec / Strong showing in the Interview.

yes, I definitely understand it's my fault. but everyone comes from different backgrounds and schools/majors, so I don't know... holistic approaches would seem logical, but it does seem for med schools it's all about the #'s. maybe I'll do a post-bach, but we'll see.
so back to my original question then.. are most cut-off's at a 3.5?

Who knows. Applications ARE, for the most part, reviewed holistically - a 3.5 isn't a terrible GPA by any means, and I doubt that you'll get screened at most schools. If the rest of your application is strong, I don't think you'll have any major problems getting interviews or acceptances. If the rest of your application is mediocre or weak, you'll probably run into a few issues.

I really, really don't think so. I'm sitting at 9 interviews and granted, I'm sure a lot of it was luck, but still, I have nowhere near a 3.5.
