I graduated last december. Since then I've been taking classes at community colleges nonstop (its only been 1 or 2 classes at a time), for a total of 6 classes (currently 1 class this fall semester). I did this because 1) I needed to take some additional prereqs that I didnt in undergrad (easy ones like psych) and 2) I did poorly in chemistry, so I retook both semesters of General Chem. Not only did I want to improve my GPA, but I wanted to retake GChem to show the opt colleges that I understood the material, and that my poor grades in undergrad were due to various other reasons. I have gotten straight A's in all the community college courses.
If I were you, I would take as many classes as you could at community colleges and show to the opt schools that you're determined to improve your grades and that you CAN improve...schools like to see improvement. I only took 1-2 classes at a time because I spent my extra time gain experience working at an optometry office and shadowing ODs.
Hope that helps, good luck!

I only applied to PUO and they never said anything about my GPA or extra classes.
I'm currently taking classes that will improve my GPA. SCO said that should help my chances of being accepted when they receive my new transcripts. ICO told me to take more science classes, which I can't because I then won't be able to get my BS. A lot of the schools have a hard time taking into account that you may have had a full time job in order to support your family while taking these classes, which is somewhat lame in my opinion. Because that can affect the hours you take during the semester and why your grades might be a little lower than everyone who took out loans or did it all on Daddy's dime.

Got interviews for all, had SUNYs interview first and got in. It was my first choice so I'm not going to the other interviews.
