I have couple of question on computing the GPA. When you retake a class, does AMCAS average out the two grades?

For example:
First attempt - 3 units of C
Retake - 3 units of A

In the end, is it 3 units of B or 6 units of B?

Another question: I know there is a thread on this right now (there seems to be alot of confusion), but does anyone know if Psychology courses count in the science GPA?

The latter. Psych is generally not BCPM, unless there's a lot of biology in the particular course.

I don't understand the confusion, BTW. Each class counts as the number of credits it was taken for, at the grade received. The name or course number of the class doesn't matter, except for classification purposes. If you take 6 credits of college coursework, it counts as 6 credits.

You report both classes, since you took each one during different semesters you just write them in for the semester you took it using the grade you got at that time.

Medikit and liverotcod:

Did you actually have experience with this? Did you repeat exactly the same classes? Some people say that their grades were combined for 3 credits.

Yes, the 2004 AMCAS. Yes, I repeated the exact same class. Furthermore, the AMCAS system has no way of knowing that a course is a repeat. You're just entering each class you took, along with its credits and grade. This is unlike the AACOMAS, by the way, which does record if a class was a repeat and takes the most recent grade.

exmike says otherwise.

Do you have the link to that thread handy? I'm curious to check it out...

here it is:

That is WRONG!

You will get the equivalent of 3 units of 3.0 if you retake a 3 unit C and replace it with an A.

You will see that your AMCAS GPA units is the same as your transcript units even though you are adding in retakes on AMCAS. This is because you dont get extra units for throwing in retakes.

I had 121 AMCAS GPA hours, and 121 GPA hours on my college transcript. This is after I added in about 7 retakes in AMCAS.

If it was averaged the way you said, then I would have about 150 AMCAS gpa hours.

Actually, when you enter a course in AMCAS, it asks you to select a repeat checkbox if it was a repeat. I'm really confused about this. My science GPA is more than .1 higher if it's the way Exmike says.

I disagree with exmike (just this once!). It may be that he entered his courses incorrectly and it wasn't caught by the review process. Cf. page 38 of the AMCAS guide. All coursework, including repeated courses, is counted. But like he says, it's unlikely to make much of a difference. Best bet: call them at (202) 828-0600 and ask.
