GPA question

I am preparing to apply to the Optometry program for September 2007. My undergrad GPA is not very good and I am planning to go back to school as an unclassified student and repeat some of the second year science courses. Does anyone have any suggestions about what courses are better to repeat? I was thinking of Cell Biology, Organic Chem, human biology and microbiolgoy.

As long as you didn't receive a D in any of the courses, perhaps just take other easier courses to show that you're capable of doing well in general. A higher mark in a retake course is a possibility, but by far, retaking offers no guarantee that you will receive a higher mark as they're quite challenging (you should know this from the first time around). If you insist on retaking some though, probably focus them more towards the biology and microbiology side. My greatest suggestion is just to study very hard for the OAT and just do extraordinarily well on it and you should be fine. Marks afterall are important, but because the universities/colleges aren't standardized, certain schools put a little more weight on the OAT scores.

you also have to find out if the school you want to apply to will accept your new grades rather than your old grades, or both. i myself also retook some classes to boost up my gpa, but at the end, some schools counted every single class that i've taken. the new grades from repeated class didn't overide the older bad grades. because of that, my final gpa didn't boost up that much as i hoped.
but it'll certainly be helpful to retake some classes that you did bad on because it shows to the school that there's a trend of improvement and you are able to do well if you are determined.

if and when you land an interview with an optometry school, be prepared to explain the grades you've gotten in the past. i was grilled for getting C's in physics ! but i did okay in that part on the OAT, so now i'm just waiting to see what happens.
