I havent taken the MCATs yet but is a gpa of 2.8 or 2.9 good enough too get into DO school? Or should I take an extra year and bring that gpa up? My EC's are excellent. Hopefully my LOR's are good too. What you guys think? Or should i give up hope.

No that is not good enough. Some schools have cut-off at 3.0 I believe. Has it happened before, yes, there are always the exceptions but dont count on it. You want to give yourself the best possible chance, so I would suggest to get it up to at least 3.0, and even better at 3.3 or above.

i i have the same accum.GPA but 3.5 Sc.GPA and no MCAT yet .i hope adcom will see that difference in favor of science. actually the bad Accum. GPA came from my third world country about 15 years ago, and I kept pushing it up from 2.3 to 2.9 .i'm sure you know how hard to push about 180 credit up.

Hi Mr. Doc,

Remember that for DO schools, your GPA is calculated with repeat grades, not the two averaged together. So, chances are that your GPA for DO schools will be higher than your AMCAS GPA (but only if you repeated any classes).

I think if you do well enough on the MCAT you would have a shot for sure.

I can not in good mind tell you to go ahead and apply early. I know people have got in with that low of a GPA but I would recommend covering the possibility you won't be accepted. Thus, I think you should register for another year of undergraduate while you apply. As mentioned AACOMAS replaces grades so look at your transcripts and fill your year in this order:

Repeating:
Prerequisite and 50-60%
Non-prerequisite and 50-60%
Prerequisite and 60-65%
Non-prerequisite and 60-65%
...
Then taking additional courses if there is still space.

Do well (at least 75%, preferably 80%) and if you have no admissions luck by the end of first semester, update your marks and send in your current transcripts again. Thus, taking another year may increase your potential in the upcoming cycle as well as the following. It would also help if there is an increasing trend in your GPA over completed years.

Don't be discouraged at all, you will get there 2008 or soon after if you keep at it.

thanks for all the replies guys, I sure will be updating right after the first semester if i have not gotten any acceptances. Also ive been studying my ass off the the mcats, hopefully i will get a 30+ which will help me balance my low end gpa.

I'd say things don't look that good...but hey, if you rock the MCAT to make up for it, and great ECs and LORs (as most people unfortunetly go), who knows. Retake a few of those C's and that should help a lot!

I certainly wouldn't give up hope! Retake some classes or sign up for some that will help bring up your gpa and rock the mcat and you should be just fine. You can always apply while taking the classes, it can't hurt! Good luck🙂

I had a 2.997 uGPA cumulative, so I went on and got an MS in biochem, I have a 3.9 gGPA now and an overall cumulative of about 3.25, tough to get 60 hours of work to over power 140 hours. I have taken the MCAT twice, once my JR year of undergrad got a 26R and then last fall got a 27Q. But dont give up, if you want to go to medical school you might have to do something more to prove yourself. Granted I have a waitlist, 3 pre-interview holds, and one rejection, so I am not yet a bad uGPA defeated success story, but I applied pretty late, was complete in Jan of this year. So keep up the hard work, you can make it if you really want it.

Dont think the road ends here, cause that is not the case...If you do well on your MCAT that will counter the lower gpa...be positive, this is nowhere near an impossibility👍
