ok, i am sure this question has been asked
more than a few times, but here it is anyway.

my ugpa is horrible, to say the least. it is something like 2.2..
and my sgpa isn't much better(2.5)

I'd like to think that is because of my personal problem that i suffered throughout my college years, and i can do better if i was given a chance.

so I am doing post-bach work, and am getting decent grade(3.5), even though the turn around is not really dramatic as i hoped it to be...

anyhow, I am planning to go into smp starting 2009 spring,
and apply for 2010 cycle.

however, I keep hearing people say, it won't matter what i do in
the smp and post-bach if the TOTAL gpa(undergrad+post-bach-smp) is at least above 3.0??

that is really discouraging, because, it will take me probably more than
3 years of full time schooling before I get a chance to apply..

anyone has any input in this?

dentistry is something that I dream of,
but i feel like I have to be realistic at the same time,
since I am almost 30 already.

You seem to be on the right track though. It is unfortunate because people often don't understand while in undergrad how important it is... but professional schools see uGPA as the end all and be all. I remember thinking in my Jr. year that I could slack and do a masters to pull up my GPA if it drops. HAHAHAHA... riiiiiiight like that works. It helped to get me in I think along with 3 years of working in cancer research in a hospital, but the MS doesn't count for your uGPA. Special masters programs are a bit different in that their only real purpose is to show you can do the work to compete with medical or dental students. Don't think it is impossible to pull off what you are trying. There is a guy in my class who is 36 or 37, and at least 3 others are in their early 30s. A D.5 at VCU is 40+. It really is never too late unless you are going to run into retirement before you graduate.

What I would suggest to you is to build communication with schools you are interested in. Ask them what you need to do to get accepted. Most will tell you because they know if you are dedicated, you will do it and they will have made a good choice. Listen carefully to their advice and work from there. PS... CRUSH THE DAT! They will take you more seriously.

If you aren't willing to stick it out, then you need to find a different field. Good luck. 😉
