How do you guys convert your GPA?
does the ECE do it for you by course -by course evaluation?
or do you figure it out by yourself? How do you calculate that? from a percentage system?

thanks

hi stdupont

yeah ece does the conversion for u. u need to provide them with the material they require like ur syllabus, diploma, marks sheets etc. and they do all the work!!😛 u get grades for each subject u took exams for in your old dental school and a total gpa out of a maximum of 5. this is for the course-by-course eval that most schools here look for.

hope this helps.

ece gives gpa out of 4.

out of 4 ...sorry.......shows that i shouldnt post late in the night. thanks for correcting me ubd. (my gpa of 3.7 would be pathetic if it was out of 5!!😛 )

thanks itsme.

moral of the story: dont post when ur sleepy!😛

thanks you guys

I'm not familiar with Indian grading system, so.... Is the "percentage og mark" based on credit/hours taken and the grade awarded?
GPA is based on that, so maybe that's where the discrepancy comes from.

Anyway, you should email ECE and ask how is it that they evaluate Indian grades when "translating" it to US system.

yes ece considers the credit hours according to our syllabus and that varies from university to university. that is tallied with your scores in individual subjects and hence the discrepancy. eg: 2 people may have got 90 on a subject but one is going to get an A and the other a B just coz the university credit hours for the subject vary!! yeah....tough luck! but thats the way it works.🙄 i dont think we need to sweat it too much though!

It is a simple but ridiculous equation:

Any thing above 60 % is A (4.0)
55-60 B (3.0)
50-55 C (2.0)
Repeat is F (0.0)

and at the end it is averaged across to find out the final GPA. So if some one has consistently scored just above 60 in all the subjects would get 4.0 where as a person with 80% in all the subjects except for one in which he/she has 50 would be around 3.9. Thats the tragedy of the system. Its ridiculous because they assume getting 60 in every university is of the same effort which is not true in reality. In some schools it is customary to have more than 50 percent people failed in some courses and half the class atleast repeats an year. On the other hand there are places where the grading is very liberal.

I don't understand this system. A 90 as a total score in a class, is an A, no matter credits amount the class has. But depending on the amount of credits the class has, it will influence your GPA more or less. But still an A. 🙄

I don't really get the "simple but ridiculous equation" DDS Fight talks about. 😕

Anyhow...... Good think I don't have to deal with that system. 😀

i guess u are right dds-fight.......but remember they do take into account the credit hours that differ from univ to univ and state to state!

once they take into account individual subjects, credit hours etc. the grades look pretty average and the end result is a gpa that we dint expect! and one bad subject makes the whole picture look average!! i guess 60%=A is for the individual subjects would explain the average grades on the eval report and the overall gpa not as good as the overall percentage we get in our schools. 🙁

does any of this make sense??????

None at all.

Even after reading all these posts about ECE ,I can't make head or tail of their evaluation method.to sum it up,does it mean if your subject credits are high you will get a better GPA?
In our college the first rank holder very rarely crossed 70% [infact only 2 times ever] so you can imagine the marks rest of us got.they were quite stingy with scores🙂 ,but still I got a reasonably good GPA.I guess the fact abt credit explains it.Our final year was 1 1/2 years not 1 year like the rest of the colleges .maybe that counts.
1 more thing toothmail, did you get confirmation for your application from ADA?just curious becoz I caused you some anxiety..........

thanks for asking dentek2..... called ada and they told me that they received all the required material from me and applis being processed.

yeah i have stopped trying to figure out the gpa........after all....what we get is what we have to live with! we cant do much about it!😛

Ok, here is what I found on the web, a place teaching you how to calculate your Grade Point Average:

Idaho State University
GPA FAQs
http://www.isu.edu/enroll/gpa.shtml

My freshman year is long gone, 😛 , but if I remember right this was the way we were taught to calculate our GPAs also.

I think ECE should publish something about their procedures in its website, without going into too much detail they could explain how each country education is evaluated. Maybe if you guys write, they should be able to tell you. After all there are many Indians using their services and probably wanting to know the same answers. 😕

I'm pissed at ECE too 'cause my GPA came lower than my school original GPA. 😡

EDIT: another GPA calculator link http://www.iusb.edu/~regr/gradeinfo.html

yeah ece seems to have its own set of rules for the gpa!! i visited a lot of those "gpa" sites when i was disappointed with my gpa....but hey....we cant do anything about it!!

i even requested ece to see if there was anything wrong with their eval and .........zilch...nada........no use at all!! they said theres nothing wrong! i mean what was the point doing well in dental school if our gpa shows something else?! 🙁

our dental schools highest rankers were maybe 75% or so. and our school was not too generous with marks either!! 🙁
