Hey, guys, I was curious on how important GPAs are in term of competetive residencies? Lets say you get average board scores within that speciality and you did ok on rotations. What kind of GPAs are considered competetive for DO or MD ophthalmo or plastic residencies? Can we say anything above 3.5 is awesome? If I just maintain anything in the lower 3.0's, does it mean I can kiss those residencies goodbye?

Based on what my classmates told me (those were going for derm, optho, rads, ortho) there are strict cut-offs for Board scores for many residency programs below which they don't even invite you for an interview. So it won't matter if you have a 4.0...unfortunately they will most likely not invite you.
That's not to say it's impossible.....just unlikely.

killer LOR's = ok, wow
3.8 = thats nice
great MS3/4 grades = gold star

not sure what rates 'awesome' but i'd imagine if you outshine more than 3 interns and/or 2 residents, u can be considered awesome 👍

good luck

Yes, and unfortunately don't even use the +/- system. Sucks to get those 89s and 79s.

But it's great when it comes to the 80s and 90s.
