GPR in Colorado

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was a resident at the Sands House clinic 2003-4 (Health Sciences Center). I know that the VA is a great experience because it's a more well-rounded one. DON'T apply at the Denver General Program. There's a reason why there are always spots left there after the match.

I learned a lot at the Sands House, about surgery at least. I didn't do as much operative as I would have liked to, and definitely not as much pros or fixed. I did become a whiz at extracting teeth, however, which is valuable when you're in practice.

My advise is try for the VA. It pays more also. Sands House next. Don't bother with DG unless you want to be totally miserable.
Hope this was helpful.

Thank you for your input. I have applied to all 3 programs and so far only gotten an interview at Denver General. I think I am going to take the interview anyway just to check out the program, but I think it will be lower on my list. What was your on-call like at UCHSC?

Don't listen to the putz above. Yes, Denver Health is probably the lesser of the programs in Denver, but I wasn't miserable. I had fun and learned a lot. I applied to GPRs late and my choices were limited. I gained an incredible amount of experience in OMFS, endo, restorative, pedo. Yes, it is a 'general' hospital and the patients did not have the finances for crowns, veneers, etc. They have an entirely new clinic from what I understand (from talking to a first year OMFS resident there). With that being said, at least check it out. The GPR director is a straight shooter, though the OMFS director actually pulls the strings. If you're thinking OMFS, then that would be the place to be, especially with an attached 4 yr surgery program.
Oh yeah, typically the call schedule there (4 years ago) is q6. It's supposed to be in-house, but I never stayed there. If the patient wasn't asymmetric, I wasn't coming in. Good luck!
I actually found my way back to Denver at the Ortho program at CU. Can't wait for boarding season! 😀

Anyone on here going to Denver for a GPR next year? I'll be at the VAMC and it would be cool to start making some connections in Denver.

I completed my residency at the VAMC in Denver. Loved it! Great program director and staff. Very well rounded. I only did a couple of implants, but I guess they are doing a ton now. (Doesn't matter for me, I am in pedo now!) Let me know if you have any questions. Jenn

Anyone else out there who did a GPR at Denver General? I just got an interview there... Just really want to be in Denver next year!! Is it worth doing the GPR at General if that were to be my only choice?
