Although this is a looong ways away, I just wanted to know what some of the differences are between these types of programs. Specifically what are the pros and cons of one type of program vs. the other? Is there a difference in competitiveness for applying? Do students receive stipends for both types of programs or are they any programs that require students to pay tuition? I know some of this information is already on SDN but I would like as much as possible!

I've looked into this a lot and here's what I found.

TRADITIONALLY, a GPR was hospital based and included rotations in more medical-oriented fields, and an AEGD was more dental practice oriented and based in dental schools and community health centers.

However, now, the definitions of both programs are so similar that a GPR is not necessarily different from a given AEGD, if that makes any sense. There are still GPR programs that are hospital based and AEGDs that are more clinical practice oriented, but that traditional separation of definitions is gone now, and you might find characteristics of each type of practice in each program.

So when it comes time to apply to programs, best thing to do is to talk to current residents and look at the curriculum instead of going by the label GPR or AEGD.

Thank you for that clarification! And as far as the tuition/stipend situation, do you know how that typically works for both programs?

Neither charges tuition (that I'm aware of), and both pay a salary/stipend with benefits.

GPRs typically pay a little more.
