I am looking into MASS, CT, NYC and Phili programs before going into Peds.
What is the word on the street regarding these programs? I am most confused about the different NYC programs.

Thanks!!

From my understanding GPR is hospital based so you will be on call and you will see trauma. AEGD is clinically based for the most part, pretty much like an extra year of dental school where you will see tougher cases so you become proficient.

unfortunately u will need to research each individual program as many gpr's are "clinic based" and some aegd's are hospital based..

if u want to get a feel for all areas of dentistry...it would be best to find a program with no specialty programs on site.
...and i'd avoid most programs located in dental schools.

...but since u plan to go into pedo, it may be in your best interest to explore institutions that also have a pedo program..

Why do you recommend against dental school AEGD's? Because of the specialties that are often associated with the dental school? Which GRP's do you know of that are more clinical-based? It takes so long to researd all this, and the websites are often so incomplete!!

Thanks!!

I am looking at the AEGD programs at Lutheran Medical center in Arizona and Hawaii, Univ of Pacific SF, Howard University, Univ of Michigan, Univ of med and dent NJ, and Baylor.
Anyone have any comments about any of these programs? I am looking for a clinical AEGD, or a clinical GPR.

What about the Puerto Rico GPR? Anyone know anything, or know the website for the program?

Thanks for any comments!!!...

You're already looking at GPRs, Gavin? Wow, you are a gunner. 😉 😀

But I guess it wouldn't hurt me to do a little looking ahead too.

Well, just more or less thinking of areas I'd like to apply to. I don't want to go into the process completely blind. Nothing serious yet.

aksach,
I've been looking at different AEGD/GPR programs as well, and in the process, I came across GPR UMC Fresno (in california) which gives you tons of experience in pedo. You may want to look into it, even though it's not in your listed states.

b/c at SOME unis...
the faculty ALSO believe that an aegd is just an extention of dental school..and they'll treat u as such
(not a good thing)

in terms of specialties..
they need to be fed.
the gpr's/aegd's get the leftovers usually..

if i were u..
..just pick up a phone.
call any programs you are interested in and tell them that u are interested and you want more info..ask them what do they "have to offer" a resident...."what are their practice goals".. that type of stuff.

the hawaii program is the ONLY aegd program through PASS. takes only 1 resident a year. last year they took someone from Columbia.
the dude had like a 94 or 95 board.
heard that program works you like mad, cuz u'r the only resident there.

pm gutta percha..

he knows his stuff...
...and iirc, he attended one of the programs that u mention.

Stay away from the lutheran aegd in Arizona or anywhere. I attended that one for 5 months and it sucked. It has to be one of the worse run aegd's out there. Dr. caputo is the head guy in AZ and he will try and rule your life worse than dental school. Dr. reed the other guy is cool and fairly famous in the dental world, but doesn't have as much say.

I went to one of the better clinical schools, UOP, and was stuck in long distance chats over the television with *****s from other sites which is what the teaching section is based on. If you want to advance your knowledge in dentistry stay away from lutheran. In AZ you just do EXT and PEDO.

My friends and my experiences with gpr's, aegd's are that if you aren't a complete ***** in dentistry then stay away from them. Go get a job at a community health center and get paid for your work. Since you are then making good money you can afford to go to great continuing ed courses. Any residency you go to isn't going to have steve buchannan or david hornbrook presenting info, but CE's will.

Trust me, I've been down that road

Gutta Percha -
Which LMC Arizona AEGD program did you go to? Isn't there a bunch LMC programs in AZ?

This thread is 5 years old and....

no, you cannot kick it.

But really though, I think it says that gutta guy's last activity was like 3 years ago so you probably aren't gonna get a response from him unfortunately.
