I hear the GPRs get a lot of trauma experience at Fresno when they take call. It's not on your list, but VA Long Beach is supposed to be excellent. Lots of implants.

I am a third year dental student at UCSF and I have heard great things about all the VA GPR programs in CA because I am also looking into applying for GPR programs for 2008-2009. I believe there is also a great AEGD prog at UOP. Good luck!

Just a note...I would expect the CA GPR's to get a lot more competitive. Now that licensure w/out exam is an option in CA if you do a GPR, more and more students are looking into doing some advanced training after D school. I know a lot of students in my class at UCSF applied to and got into a lot of the CA GPR spots this year; more than in previous years I believe. Is this a result of the new licensure w/out exam law? Who knows, I can only speculate.

With that said, there are a lot of great programs and a few not so great programs in CA. The good ones I know of are Long Beach VA, Mare Island VA, and the SF VA. I know residents at these places and they are very pleased with their residency. The others I either don't know much about, or have heard some negative things. Big negatives from UOP AEGD, UCLA GPR, and UCSF GPR. I'd rather not go into it more than that, especially because it should be taken with a grain of salt. All programs are different, and some will fit you perfectly, where others will just make you miserable. It all depends on the person. Find out what you want out of a GPR and go from there.

what's the difference between an aegd and a gpr?

I know someone at UCSF GPR and they aren't doing ****. It's essentially worthless. Probably do more in dental school. I also know someone at the longbeach VA who likes it. Placed 8 implants and restored a bunch too. Also, I hear good things from the SF VA GPR. I've heard mixed things from the UOP AEGD...mainly that the Union City site is the best by far, but nothing specific. Don't know anything about the other programs you mentioned.

Thank you to all who replied!

AEGD is generally based at a dental school, whereas a GPR is a hospital based residency. i hear the GPRs are more desirable b/c you will get a stipend and it's nice to get out of the dental school setting..

jb!🙂

Can anyone give more information on the AEGDs in CA?

I was also wondering about the competitiveness of AEGDs in CA. How competitive they are and what is needed to get into say the UCLA AEGD which I believe is quite popular. If anyone has any experiences or know of anyone that's gone thru the process and are going into an AEGD in CA, any information is appreciated thanks!!

The AEGD's are easier to get into than the GPR's. UCLA had some open AEGD spots post match this year and Charles Drew also did for GPR. That doesn't mean its easy to get in to those spots. They are all competitive considering the new law that lets you skip the license exam in place of a GPR or AEGD. Basically its not going to be a cake walk to get into any GPR or AEGD in Cali.

I actually heard the opposite that GPRs were easier to get into than AEGDs? With the new license do you think they'll be more likely to accept people from California in that case or do you think they'll just be looking for more of a rounded person that fits into their program?
