hey everyone,

i'm considering doing a GPR after graduating, and i'm wondering if there are programs out there that anyone has heard of, or been a part of, that places more of a relative emphasis on surgery. is there such a thing, or are pretty much all GPRs pretty similar in terms of the scope of what the programs offer?

alternatively, it's been suggested to me that if i want to do a year of residency that has a more surgical focus, to do an OMFS internship. just feeling out everyone's $0.02 on the matter. any insight is appreciated.

I would agree with the internship suggestion, if surgery is really what you're after. I've read in other posts on this forum that Jackson Memorial has good surgical experiences in the hospital, but I have no direct experience or knowledge. What kind of surgical experience are you referring to? If it's extracting teeth, then I think you'll find that most of the gprs will help you out there. For mandible fractures or general o.r. time in the hospital, check out programs at Level 1 trauma centers or those with a more medical focus. hope this helps a little.

I guess what I'm looking for is to get some more exposure to OMFS without full on committing to applying for a residency, to see if it's really what I want to do. The thing is I'm going into fourth year in the fall, and I've kind of missed the boat on doing externships. It hasn't been until recently that I've thought about pursuing OMFS, so externships weren't really in my game plan. I'm doing research this summer so I'm committed to that right now, but it's possible (although I think quite difficult), to go on an externship or two during fourth year.

I suppose that doing an internship would be a good alternative. Is applying to an internship via the match, or is it simply a direct application to the programs I'm interested in? Also, do I wait until the match results are revealed before applying for an internship or can I apply beforehand?

I believe internships are for people that are confident they want to do OMFS (anyone step in and correct me), but either (1) did not get in on their first round or (2) want to beef up their application. The spots are typically filled after the match is released, so technically you can apply to PASS/MATCH for GPRs and internships the same year (especially if you do not match). From the sounds of it, you want to gain more exposure to OMFS but are not sure if you are 100% committed yet, does that sound right? I think a GPR for a surgical focus would be a geat idea for you - and yes, there are GPRs where the residents take first call for OMFS and have a heavy surgical focus. I'll let some more knowledgeable people chime in about which ones those are.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply. Yeah that's pretty much it. Just trying to get more exposure to the field without the externship route essentially. You also mentioned that I could apply to GPRs and internships via PASS/Match the same year. Is that how internships are applied to? Or do you have to submit an application directly to the school once the match results are released? Sorry, I'm just a bit confused about the whole process.

Hey, I'm not going into OS, but I'm applying to GPRs right now and I'd say definitely look up schools for their GPR program curriculums because they all have completely different focuses for their program. Some are much more OS heavy with long rotations in OS, some place implants and some don't, some are more bread and butter dentistry.

Since it seems like you're interested in OS, you might be more interested in GPRs that are more hospital based. So those programs associated with hospitals would be better. AEGDs, and most VA hospitals are on the "hybrid" side with more bread and butter dentistry so they might not be what you're looking for. Hospital-based programs are often very similar to OS residencies from what I hear on the forums.

I've heard Columbia GPR is very OS heavy and the residents are really involved with the OMFS residents. It's a Non-Match also.
The Stonybrook GPR has a medical-specific route which has a lot of hospital based rotations, sounds good for an OS hopeful. Also Non-Match.

There should be a lot of other schools but I'm looking for more AEGD type of programs. Sorry I don't know TOOO much on other programs but that's what I've heard of so far. Hope this helps!
