On my search for good GPR’s to attend, some lack specialists in certain disciplines like no endodontist or no prosthodontist or no periodontist. Should that be a red flag? Does it significantly effect the quality of the program and your training? They say they have general dentists who do these procedures well. Should I be sold on that or stay away from those programs all together? Keep in mind some of these programs are good programs based on past residents opinions/here say. Would appreciate your thoughts on this.

The AEGD I run has no specialists, and I don't think we don't really suffer that much for it. We're out of a health center, so it's a very different environment, and a different patient population. We try to keep as much in house as possible, but we occasionally need to refer. The stuff we refer out are things that you wouldn't be wanting to do in your general practice anyways, haha.

One thing you're forgetting is that there weren't always so many specialists. Endo is actually one of the newest specialties. The head of my undergrad Endo department was a General Dentist (I graduated in 2013). Back in the day before there were Endodontists (in the 70's), you just had general dentists who were known in the area as being really good at Endo, and so more complicated cases would be sent their way. One of our best Prostho instructors at school was also a General Dentist.

Depends on what you're trying to learn. I'm sure there are many good GP attendings out there in good programs. But if you want to do more complex procedures, FMR, all on 4/6/8, extensive implant procedures, second molar/through the crown endo, I would prefer to learn from specialists simply due to the wealth of knowledge they can provide.
