I was just wondering how many prospective vet students went to grad school or intend on going to grad school?

I'm only a sophomore right now but I'm thinking about grad school before even attempting to apply to vet school. I'm not sure why, I've heard good things about grad school and helping you out if your GPA is lower. Right now I have a 2.78 after 2 semesters, but it should go up after this semester because I'm getting good grades. I realize I have plenty of time to get my GPA up but I'm not sure how Chemistry is going to treat me.

So, if you have any words of wisdom please post them or just tell me about your experience.

Well..why do you want to go to grad school? What do you want to study? Do you want to go into research? Write a thesis? Present a dissertation? Add 1-4 more years of study and tuition? You can't just kind of...decide to go to grad school just for the sake of it and hope to get your GPA up...it can go down too. If you know you want to go to vet school...why not pull up your GPA now while you are still in undergrad, rack up your hours, and then if you don't get in first round, think about where you want to go next. If you think chem is going to give you trouble, start studying or try and find help before problems arise.

I intend on going to grad school during vet school, and I know that caninerepro, Nyanko, gellabella and a few others have already gone.

Don't forget that grad school admissions are also competitive, and it takes effort to get in. What subject were you thinking about? You should try to have a good GPA within your subject, get a good GRE score, and get some experience on the research side of things while an undergrad to prepare you for grad school. You shouldn't treat it like a sure thing.

Just don't forget that grad school is an endeavor in itself - it's not a grade booster. In fact, because it's harder than undergrad, what little help it might be as a grade booster probably isn't worth the effort. If you only want to go to help you get into vet school, you're probably better off retaking classes to raise your GPA.

Well, first off I haven't looked into it thoroughly, I know some people who are in grad school right now and I know what they say about it and that's about it. I don't know what I would study because I literally just started thinking about the possibility of grad school and haven't had the opportunity to do research on it.

Secondly, what I meant when I said "helping out if your GPA is lower" was not that it would bring my GPA up, but rather help me gain experience and possibly help me out when applying and getting accepted to vet school. That's what I've heard some people saying, and I don't necessarily know if it is true. That's what I was hoping to find out through this thread. I would imagine that it wouldn't do much to bring my GPA up as the classes are harder. 👎 😛

I intend on bringing my GPA up over the next few years, the first year was a problematic year and I'm finally in the correct "mindset" to do well in college. It would be dumb to not try to bring up my GPA while I can!!

I am only able to retake the one class that I got a D in. Everything else are As, Bs, and Cs. The D is what brought my GPA down, so I'm D/F repeating it. Hopefully, with having the D removed I'll have at least a 3.0 and then with this semester it will be brought up to a 3.2ish or better.

Like I said, I just made this thread to get some advice to decide if grad school is even something worth thinking about. I haven't done much research on it and I figured that the best way to find out about it would be to get some input from those who have experienced it.

Good to know you're trying to bring your GPA now instead of later. I started to raise my GPA after my first 2 years. So from the beginning of Jr. year til i graduated I was only able to bring my GPA up from a 3.2 to 3.4. it was hard!!! If only i hadnt slacked... lol oh well, i still had fun! and it worked out in the end 😉
