3.1 cGPA/3.1 sGPA, 36 MCAT. KY resident, non-URM. :hello: (d@mn GPA 😡)

Planning on pursuing an MBA as well as taking more undergrad courses to boost my GPA.

IF I take these concurrently, will my undergrad courses will still count even though I will be a graduate student? I will be a grad student for financial aid purposes, if that makes a difference. I have asked Bursar, Registrar and Financial aid at my school and unfortunately they are all but clueless.

Any similar experiences?

Yes, your undergrad courses will always count, even if it was community college credits from ten years ago and you already have a PhD.

Others will likely know more, but iirc masters/grad classes are considered wildly inflated and you're recommended to take a semester or two of undergrad level past-bacc coursework to counteract low GPAs

Thank you @efle !
I am planning on taking 2-3 courses of (4XX-5XX level) ugrad science along with the MBA courses (as they are in 5 week accelerated blocks) and I have prior experience in management/business courses, so the MBA courses should be fairly manageable.

The MBA is for me and my own personal interests. It is extra and I do not expect it to carry much (if any) weight for my app. Perhaps it may help when I am an attending, but we shall see when I get there!

I appreciate your feedback 🙂

What would your GPAs look like after 4-6 science classes if you make As? Kentucky is a very good state to have residency, both public universities interview ~65% of instate applicants and your MCAT is at their high end, but their 10th percentiles for GPA are around 3.33

With that MCAT score and your state of residence I think you might be able to get away with not having to go the SMP route as of now but I would do something to address the sGPA. A formal or DIY post-bacc say where you take 3-4 science classes a semester for the next year or so would help your cause with a strong performance. Do well in that, and that might be enough to get you in somewhere particularly in your state.

Of course on the other hand acing an SMP would be the single best thing you could do for yourself. An SMP is bigger risk and the standards will be extremely high, but the reward will also be greater. It's all about figuring out if that's a risk you feel like would be worth taking.

After 30 hours it would be 3.2 cGPA and 3.3 sGPA. Have one too many B-'s :yeahright:

I was going to say looking at MSAR my MCAT is >90% for UofL and the 90% for UofK. Perhaps that could salvage my lower GPA?

Rest of my app is quite solid, so it is really just a GPA repair game at this point.

You should have a decent chance if you pull off a 3.8+ in ~30 credits worth of post-bacc work. However, I'm concerned about your mcat. When did you take it? And when does the old mcat expire for the KY schools?

'Tis the new MCAT... my bad.
I took it September 23 of last year, so it will be good for a few more years... Definitely not something I want to retake though!! I got a 518. I converted it to the 36 so I could (more easily) compare the percentiles since MSAR still reports on the old scale.

My apologies for the confusion.
