Hi guys, my cousin goes to CUNY in New York; She was told from her premed advisor that DO medical schools ( not AACOMAS ) are going to accept grade replacement for a certain mcat score 503-505+ , and she was very sure guaranteed that's what is going to happen.... suggesting my cousin to retake a few pre req classes.
I think it's very strange I have searched the schools specifically and haven't read anything new. I am just curious if anyone was told the same..?!

Just AZCOM will do this, and it will probably be just for one year.

Edit: I should say that only AZCOM is the one doing the replacement with the specific requirements you mentioned. Others will also be doing grade replacement from my understanding, that won't have those requirements

Did she say all schools or just AZCOM. Even PCOM didn't have a specific policy.

According to her all schools if not majority. However, application cycle will open soon and if that's true then schools will definitely inform the applicants or post it at their website! I haven't read or seen anything I just don't understand how is she so sure. Or probably she heard about pcom and azcom and misinforming pre med students. Still that's wrong...

When you say that others will be doing it, do you know of any other schools besides PCOM?

I wouldn't listen to some random advisor. Unless there is something specifically said by a college or the AOA, consider it a myth.

I would think that DO schools would have made an announcement by now, if they were doing so. Also, AZCOM's requirement is 507+, so already, not in favor for that advisor.

PCOM is not going to recalculate your GPA. They say they review the whole file and will be able to see what you took and retook but a friend emailed them and they do not say they will recalculate but that they look at your entire file.

I assume that this is what most schools will end up doing. There is no way admissions staff members are going to manually recalculate thousands of students' grades. Which is why the reply from AACOMAS stating that "some schools may continue w/ the former grade replacement policy" was pretty much bullcrap.

This is news to me.

My school us NOT doing this.

I suspect that this is yet another example of lousy pre-med advising

If all credits count the same now, isn't it a better idea to go ahead and retake C's and worse anyway? It would increase your GPA the same amount as new courses would, but there could still be potential for grade replacement...Furthermore, getting A's in the prereqs at least can only be a good thing for MCAT prep as well.

No it does not. Retakes get averaged together. So instead of having for instance 4 credits of c in O chem you will have 8 credits of c in O chem, and thats assuming oyu pull off the A the second time. So no, it is much more advantageous that you take a new class and get an A in it.

Only do retakes if you are below a C or if you dont understand the material for MCAT.

No it will be like 4 credits of C and 4 of A. So more like 8 credits of B. I think that's what you meant but just clarifying. I agree it is more advantageous to take new classes and get As

Right that is what I meant to convey, thanks for correcting me.

Take new, upper division classes like genetics, like biochem 1 and 2, like immunology, pathology, neurology, and do well to demonstrate that you can handle difficult science cirriculum.

Others will be doing grade replacement? I thought only PCOM/AZCOM will be continuing grade replacement (PCOM not so much and AZCOM has requirements). If more schools are still doing grade replacement that's news to me.

I was mostly just referencing PCOM, but that apparently isn't a true grade replacement. I haven't looked into it very extensively to be honest
