Grade Replacements

Graduated from school A this past May. Planning on taking some non degree/ post bacc courses this upcoming Spring at a different school though. Will retaking classes at this school allow for grade replacement or should I just take new/different upper level Bio's? Thanks 🙂

I think the grades will still replace, assuming it's the exact same course at both schools.

If the grades are C's or above, you'd be better off in many ways to just take some new/different upper level Bio classes.

Check the semester hours and the course descriptions. New course has to be same or more semester hours than old course, also descriptions need to be similar.

I'd retake grades C+ and below. B- and above, take new science courses.

Check out that thread. It's fairly recent and it explains your question. Also try the search function, you'd be surprised as to what comes up.

But yes in short you can retake courses at another college/university as long as they are equivalent in units and course material.

I saw that thread already too and it answered the different college part, but nothing on taking the classes post degree. Edit: BC I'm not sure how the Repeat/Last repeat would work when the grades are under separate university sections

Still debating on what to do though, both of the retakes would be for previous C+'s, Genetics and Physiology of Exercise.

Here's a link to aacomas and how they want you to submit your grades, especially repeats.

Before retaking my courses I did a bunch of research to insure I wasn't wasting my time by taking the courses at a different institution. I did not, however, call aacomas. I would be interested in knowing what they say.

I too already have my degree and am in the process of finishing prereqs and retaking courses.

just for clarification:
1. If you retake a course once, AACOMAS will only count the grade received the second time and not the first when calculating GPA
2. both grades will appear in the application

what if at your first institution a class (such as physics) was 5 credits (lab+lecture combined), but all the other colleges only have it for 4 credits (lab and lecture combined)--will it not count for grade replacement??

I'm pretty sure it has to be the same amount of credit hours or more....so in that case it probably wouldn't count.

No. The course grade will only replace grades from a course of equal or lesser credits. They also factor in semester vs. quarter (ie, semester can replace semester or quarter, but grades from quarter calendar courses cannot replace semester courses. This is even true if you take a whole year of quarter courses.) Here's what AACOMAS sent me via email (unfortunately they denied my request for pre-approval for grade replacement):

"The rule of thumb when picking a course that will be used as a repeat is that both courses need to be on the same level (undergraduate/graduate), the credit hours for the repeat course needs to be equal or greater than that of the initial course and the content needs to be the same or similar. This is all of the guidance that we can offer to applicants. For specific questions you need to meet with your advisor."

Unfortunately, AACOMAS doesn't care how much you spend on pre-reqs. Look at it as a major favor that we've got grade replacement at all! That said, no, you don't have to take it at the original institution. You just have to make sure whatever institution you take it at offers the same class (incl quarter/semester format) at the same or greater number of credits. You can't replace a 4-credit class with a 3-credit class, just as you can't replace a 4-credit semester class with a 5-credit quarter class. Check out online courses as well. You can sometimes find much cheaper classes that way, especially if they're not core sciences (which probably look better at regular old 4 year institutions).

I've heard that it needs to be of equal or higher course load, so it may likely not be replaced. Though an A in the retake will still look good.
