What's the best format to submit a grade updates? Would school really want a formal transcript or would just stating your grades for the semester be sufficient?

Each school has different guidelines. Some schools won't care in what format you get it to them, some schools are specific about what is submitted and how it is submitted. It doesn't hurt to call the school's admissions office and ask how they would like you to submit your grades.
