Question for all you SDN post baccers. So there are only 5 weeks left before the fall semester ends. I am currently finishing up Bio I with Lab, Chem I with Lab, and Physics I with lab.

My question is...although I have tried to get all A's in my classes, I have not been able to reach that goal. I am doing well above average but not acing everything, i am not a great test taker, have huge anxiety where my life flashes before me on every test. My brain says, here it goes, you fail, no MD for you, scary stuff. This is my last chance at getting my GPA up and running, I already have an MA, I already have tons of hospital experience. So anyway, right now, my grades are: Bio Lecture A, Bio Lab A-, Chem Lecture B+, Chem Lab A-, Physics Lecture B, Physics Lab A.

I know I suck at Physics. We have two more tests in Bio which should not be a problem to ace, chemistry I have one more exam which i can rock no problem, and I have one more physics test that I will have to study my butt off to try to get that B+ in the end. Then obviously I will have to start studying for finals like tomorrow to achieve an above average grade on them.

My question is, are these grades bad so far? And no I am not being a troll. I am 100% serious about this because everyone I hear gets A's on all of their post bacc work and I cannot seem to pull it off. I am doing well but not acing classes. Anyone have any advice or suggestions on my grades? Thanks.

OP, those grades are good. just keep up with the work, and do practice problems in gen chem and physics until your fingers fall off. talk to the profs about what you need to know to do well on the finals and see what they say. i think it's still possible to bring gen chem up to an A/A-.

There are people who get in with those grades, some are better, some are worse. Because medical school admission also depends on your MCAT score and ECs, LORs, etc., this is only one part. As long as you're not consistently making Bs, then you're fine. Knock yourself out to do the best that you can for these upcoming finals; go on lockdown with no tv, socializing, etc. for the next few weeks, and see what a difference that can make.

And have your sights set on doing well next semester, as well as in organic chem, biochem, etc. You might find that you rock in those classes. Chin up, you're doing fine thus far. 👍

Yeah I could most likely get my chem grade up a bit more, its the physics that is killing me. But I am working my tail off to surpass the problems. Thanks for the advice and encouragement!

Taking 3 science classes (w/lab) can be difficult in the beginning. How much out-of-class time are you dedicating to these classes. I think you should be proud of your effort... 👍

All I do is study. Seriously. I dont have a social life, well I never had one to begin with. LOL! But, in all honesty, I dedicate my life to my studies. My fellow classmates make fun of me, they call me the ideal post baccer...needless to say, they are all 18 years old, I am 27 and need these grades come hell or high water.

However, I study and still cannot achieve the grades that I want. I know the material but cannot seem to calm my nerves when its test time. I know the material backwards and forwards but.....anyway.

Thanks for your support guys, much appreciated. As a matter of fact, its Friday night and I am studying biology for a bio test on thursday, I am starting early cause there is a lot to cover.

OP,
I'm not sure, sorry, are you in an official post-bacc program? Not that you have to be in an official post bacc program to get in somewhere but I can't imagine there are any 18 y/o there if it is a "post-bacc" program. The youngestperson in my post-bacc class 3years ago was 21. Please don't just r/o DO offhand. What are your other grades like? 🙂

Well, I am in a post bacc program but I take all of my classes with all undergrads. I am not sure then what you would call my program. I am not sure what this comment means: Please don't just r/o DO offhand. What does r/o mean?

As for my other grades. I have a 3.3 gpa from undergrad and a 3.2 from my Masters program. And two years experience in a clinical setting, worked at a city hospital as a Clinical Exercise Physiologist, have my name on some publications (but nothing too crazy). As of now, I have an A in Bio Lecture and Lab, B+ in Chem Lecture, A- in Chem Lab, B in Physics Lecture, A in Physics Lab. I know, I need to work extra hard on Physics, trust me I am working on it, but its always been my nemesis.

Good grief, woman, you sound neurotic. Your grades are fine. If you continue to do well in your classes, and get over 30 on your MCAT, you'll have a good shot at getting into an MD program and an excellent one into a DO program. I know, because I speak from experience. A B in physics isn't going to break your application.

I think "r/o DO offhand" means "write off DO offhand".

Once again, I farted.

Yeah I guess you can call me neurotic. I guess I didnt explain myself fully before. The thing is, I already took Bio I, Chem I, and Physics I at a Community College. I got ok grades, Bio B+, Chem B and Physics B.

When I got into my post bacc program, I decided that I would retake these classes. I got a lot of mixed feelings about retaking. I am fully aware that I may be at a disadvantage with adcoms. However, I didnt feel like I had gotten a well rounded understanding of any of the materials, and that I would also be at a disadvantage for the MCAT. So, I decided to retake these classes and I figured I could ace them. But, that just doesnt seem like it is happening, especially in PHysics. I may end up with a B again in Physics which probably wont look so great on my transcript.

So, that may explain some of my neuroticness. Sorry!

Frankly, I think the best way to judge your performance is against your classmates. If your classmates all have straight 4.0's, you are going to look slightly inept. If they all have mostly B's, you look great. This is especially true if you are competing for linkage programs. But really, your grades sound fine and I wouldn't stress out over it, either way. 😉
