Grades needed for LA surgery residency

Okay so i’m only a baby first year but i’m really interesting in pursuing large animal surgey. I’ve heard so many mixed things about grades and residency and I trust my SDN family to give me a blunt and honest response. For the most part, im a B+/A- student but I know come second year if i keep this up I may burn myself into the ground. I always hear you need really good grades while others tell me connections are most important — do well in school but you don’t need super high grades. What is everyone’s thoughts? I’m not thinking too much ahead as I know things can change but I would just hate for my grades to slip and that ruin a good opportunity for me
