I am a junior at westminster college with a interdisciplinary major in music and art, which i created myself. I want to go to dental school but don't know if I have a high enough qpa to get in. My cumulative QPA is a 2.86. This fall semester was my highest qpa for any semester so far – 3.48. This includes a B in organic chemistry. I plan on applying to dental school this coming spring once they begin accepting applications, however i dont know if I will have a cumulative of a 3.0 then. I also plan on taking the DAT this spring. Does anyone recommend applying this year or waiting until i'm a senior and possibly having a higher qpa.

It depends how you do on your DATs. I mean if you blow them out of the water and your GPA is close to a 3.0 then you may definetly have a shot at some schools which take the DAT highly into consideration over gpa.

If your DATs aren't superb then I would say to wait and boost your GPA up to at least a 3.0/3.2. (3.4/3.5 if you really wanna be on the safe side)

How's you science GPA looking so far

I don't have my science GPA figured out because of some situations. I will tell you my grades though.
Biology I C,II C+
Gen Chem I B, II C
Calc I(Does this count) C
Organic I B

and Physics I which , i got a D in last year. I am retaking it at YSU over thie summer along with Physics II. (will they count this D too?)

This comign semester i am taking Ochem II and micro. I will also have both physics grades from this summer. And senior year i plan on taking stats and another bio class, not sure what though.

man.... your grades are, in fact, not very promising. BUT, it's not the end of the world. I am not an adcom or whatever, so whatever I say here is not OFFICIAL or anything, but from what I have seen and heard from this SDN website, CGPA you need to get into some private schools that take students with low GPA is like 3.0 or something like that. Some people with lower than that got in too, but they probably have high DAT or outstanding extracurricular activities. Try to boost up your GPA a bit.. do well on your DAT like straight 20s or higher. Get lots of experience & research and good Letters of Rec... Do Anything you think will help your application and impress the admissions committee. You will have a chance somewhere.

But, I have to tell... you got lot of C's...
Good luck

Hi There!
Don't fret. You are a junior and have plenty of time. My advice to you is...raise that GPA... even if you have to take extra classes. You may even want to take an extra class or 2 over the summer or something and the winter sessions. Also...start studying for the DAT...and take it as early as you can, in order to give yourself time in case you have to "re-take" it! I too had to re-take a science class. (Organic Chemistry Lab) I was not happy with the grade, and knew that I could do better, I was told by AADSAS that they will count both grades, so I ended up doing a P/NC option (pass/nocredit) so I just got a Pass in it and then did it over again. I was told by some adcoms that it was smart to take the Pass... and not have it factored into the GPA. I think if you raise your GPA a bit...and if you blow the DAT out of the water, you will have no problem getting in somewhere.
Good Luck :luck:

Your GPA may hurt you. The DAT, however, has become increasingly important in admissions decisions. I would suggest, as others have, taking extra classes. If you take higher level bio and chem classes and do well in them, this will help balance out the poor grades. Either way, keep your chin up. You can find a place for you if you really want it badly enough. Best of luck!
